Canton

Do you want another episode or 2 with Canton? I sure do.

reply

I don't really. Nothing against the character, he was lovely. I just have an irrational dislike of the actor that played him. I have never liked him in anything I've seen him in. Not exactly sure why, to be quite honest. That being said, I also think that like Vastra, Jenny and Strax, Canton is a character that is best suited to Matt Smith's era and I think none of them should return.

reply

I'd say I have an irrational like of the actor that played him, but it's not irrational. Mark Sheppard can be a d@mn fine actor and I've loved his portrayals in a number of different roles from Battlestar Galactica to Leverage.

reply

I love him in the role, and love the episode he's in, but Sheppard has his hands full with a baby, a show that films 7 months out of the year, and conventions up to two times a month. He doesn't really have an easy schedule to work with, and Doctor Who filming schedules are pretty rough

Who?

reply

Canton Everett Deleware the Third, played by Mark Sheppard

reply

Ah right. Yeah, I wouldn't mind him back for another episode or two, honestly.

reply

No? He was a one off character who appeared in two episodes 5 years ago. He was fine, but there is literally no reason at all to bring him back.

Let's roll some tits up the flagpole and see if anyone gets wood.

reply

Nah don't see the point to be honest he was okay in his episodes but not much point coming back. Not every character has to come back that's the point of the doctor he meets people has adventures then leaves not everyone he meets becomes a huge part of his life

reply

Agreed. There are some characters that I like to see return, like the Brigadier in Classic Who or Kate Stewart in NuWho, but bringing a character back just to bring them back is pandering. He served a great purpose in his story, and that's where he should be left.

RTD had a bit of an issue with bringing everyone in, like in Tennant finales. They're great episodes, but not always needed.

reply

Yeah, if they had a good reason to do an episode set in the US in - let's say - the 1970s so his age doesn't seem wrong then I'd be all for bringing him back.

Otherwise, what's the point? Look Canton's on vacation in London - yay! ... Why? Then it's just an episode written for that character and painfully contrived. What else would there be? Oooh! Maybe 70s-era UNIT (or God help us, Torchwood) brought him over as a consultant?! Yeah, let's just... not even bother with the headaches and terribleness of that premise.

If it's not going to be 'Aliens Invade Picturesque 70s America' there's no need.

And before anyone suggests it, I REALLY don't want to see 'Doctor Saves the Apollo 13 Astronauts' ever. No, just... no.
