What was 'fun' about that episode?

I'm struggling to see it. The sci-fi aspect was borderline non-existent, and I had no fun re-living Toby Maguire's Peter Parker in a nutshell. Some of the jokes were funny this year, but that was pretty much it. Why are there people who will defend the writers, no matter how lacklustre the show becomes?

It's not my fault you have the intellectual capability of monkey shít cünt13..... Getting bent out of shape over a kids show.

You don't have to be edgy to not watch kids shows though.

Seems Dr Who fans just get more and more easily impressed as each season goes by and the quality gets worse.

The show is changing, not sure is dropping quality but I can tell you this Christmas special was better than all the rtd ones. At least for me. This is not a new subject for the who community, remember when DT left and the first episodes of Series 5 were said to be bad? After years Series 5 became one of the best seasons if not the best.

reply

For me, nothing has have been as bad as Twin Dilemma or Frontios. So, no, I don't accept that each season gets worse. And as for the new series, there have certainly been clunkers as well.

In the kingdom of the blind, you're the village idiot.

The Christmas Special is always a very different kettle of fish to the main Series.

As it's broadcast slap bang in the middle of Christmas Day at the height of post-dinner family viewing, it needs to have a much wider mainstream appeal. It needs to make sense to the viewers that pay only cursory attention to the show, generally, as well as the avid fans.

Hence, it goes light on the sci-fi/timey-wimey type stuff (nothing that needs a proper explanation) and often has a slightly rom-com-esque element to it, as last night's did.

To keep making new threads to tell everyone who did enjoy it that they're wrong suggests you're getting way too exercised about the fact that you didn't enjoy it, whilst others did. If I don't like an episode, I just don't watch it again - I'd recommend this more sanguine approach to you too.

Thank you.

I didn't like a good 80% of the last two seasons and a good 40-50% of the season before that. Other than the occasional small remark stating my disapproval, you didn't hear too much from me.

You certainly don't see me starting arguments in multiple threads and shouting down people who did not hate the episode. I'm too busy for something like that...and sane.

I take some of that back. I am guilty of it too.

I was all over the message boards after the episode where the moon turned out to be a giant alien egg. I hated that one so much I had to let everyone know how much I hated it - and why everyone else should too.

reply

For me, it boiled down to the jokes, a tight pace, and the chemistry between the actors. Those things can go a long way...even though they really didn't with this episode.

Doctor Who mainly shows fantasy aspects, rather than Sci-Fi ones. There is no explanation or suspention of disbelief, so I fail to see why you're still expecting stories to change.

I really don't see it. What aspect of Maguire you see in this episode?

reply

Peter Capaldi.

He's my favourite Spider-Man/Peter Parker so...oh well. 
