To the retired NYPD Cop

Your hands were on the trigger of a machine gun on a helicopter in Vietnam. I don't know whether women and children, elderly people or other civilians were killed in the missions you flew. Even if they weren't, you simply had no business being a soldier in that country at that time.

35 years later, you are actually wondering why other peoples hate your country and attack it.

Having been lied to by your government in Vietnam, 35 years on you expect them be honest with you about their reasons for invading Iraq. I don't think it is insulting to call this expectation naive.

Many well intentioned people just like him get lured into the glorious fantasy of helping the world by waging war. He was doing what he thought was right. He served his country. He risked his life for his country. He served the community as a police officer. He lost his son in a way that no-one should ever lose a child. He had the courage to speak up and admit his mistakes in a documentary for everyone to see. Just offer this man your condolences and leave it at that.
