Purpose of staying at Valadilene?

Why does Kate stick around Valadilene instead of immediately leaving and searching for Hans? Did Kate feel she needed to do extra research at Valadilene in order to get a better idea of where Hans was located, or was she just curious to learn more about Valadilene? If its the former, that would make a lot more sense, in my opinion. But if its the latter, that just seems really weak to me that she's wasting time in Valadilene instead of doing her job. I guess I'm just confused as to why she didn't leave right away and go to Siberia to find Hans. Thanks for your help.
