Barbershop, Hair Show, Nora's Hair Salon, Beauty Salon (CONT'D)
Nora's Hair Salon II, Barbershop Blues, The Salon, etc. Why most of the black films distributed in the past four years had something to do with a barbershop or beauty salon?
The most laughable thing about these films, with the exception of Barbershop and maybe Barbershop 2, are the mandatory ingredients: gay man, Asian woman, an unsuspecting beautician sleeping with the husband/boyfriend of a fully aware customer, the so-called funny old man, etc. These films are horrendous.
Can't black filmmakers do any better? And I don't want to hear about the racist Hollywood system. Some of the films mentioned were independently made without Hollywood molesting them. So, what's the problem?
Well, one thing I know for sure, after ten years in this business, is that not everybody is built to write and direct movies. If you have the talent, you can make a really good film for less than $10,000. Plain and simple. Most of the black filmmakers today lack the talent, and can't blame anyone when most of them are making their films outside of Hollywood.
