Are you joking?

This looks like it could possibly be one of the worst films ever made. I didn't think anything could beat You Got Served, but it looks like this might just do it. Why?!

It isn't wise to upset a wookiee.

reply

word and you got served was a whack movie, minus the b-boying
but since this is krumping...YUCK

reply

What the *beep* is krumping?

reply

It's a dance,,
I didn't know that it started in LA though.

if this movie is successful I would love to see other movies about other cultural dance crazes.

Like the south's Crunk
DC's Go-Go
or CHicago's/Detroit Jacking.

This movie is a DOCUMENTARY unlike You Got Served. So there is no terrible acting involved.

R U Jokin'this is a Great soundin' Movie.KRUMPED is the bomb.!!!

reply

I love how everyone who says this movie is gonna be awesome says stuff like "R U Jokin'this is a Great soundin' Movie.KRUMPED is the bomb.!!!"

reply

No... Just, no...

reply

Well, it can't be any worse than Elvis' "Girls, Girls , Girls" or "Beach Blanket Bingo" with Frankie Avalon.

I guess when MTV gets a hold of the dance craze, then everyone else would love the hell out it.

reply

Agree with OP.

reply

hey idiot, you haven't SEEn the film have you?

why do people like you think you can judge a film before you see it?

for the record, Rize is incredible. funny, moving, exciting, and intelligent. a terrific examination of oppression, struggle and redemption, and creative expression.

get your head out of your @ss and view the movie before making comments like that.

"but ya ARE Blanche! Ya ARE in that chair!!"

reply

[deleted]

You're exactly right. Rize shows a group of people who are making positive changes for their community, keeping children out of gangs, and starting a movement. To just label it as a stupid movie like "You Got Served" just truely shows off your ignorance.

reply

ehm, yeah its all good. but fact remains: a film with a cover like that can never really be of outstanding quality... and i am feeling the u got serrrrrrvd vibe.

btw, i agree that responses like: "dis movie iz gonna b tha bomb!" etc dont really make me wanna see it.

thats so lame.

Your an idiot.

Need I even ask whether you saw it? No, you didn't ("This LOOKS like it could possibly be one of the worst films..."?). And, critically speaking, you don't get an opinion until you have. Roger and Ebert make a habit of seeing the films before they critique them.
This a documentary. Not a comedy like You Got Served. These krumpers and clowners are keeping kids in their neighborhoods from drugs and gangs, and for this reason alone we should show respect. And that's before we even get into the awesome dances they pull off.
I can't krump to save my life, but I can see and admire those who can, just like I can't play the guitar but respect John Frusciante.
In short, until you've gone out and rented the movie, watched it, and understand what it's about, stop talking. If you do go see it and hate it, then that's your taste. But until then, stop posting crap here that colors how others view the film.

reply

right instead of that I act and sing but still can dance

reply

Sincerely... What does all that has been said before has to do with anything?

The racists and the zoologians of black people get together and fight. One hates blacks, the other loves blacks, both strive not to see black people as real people. For the record, you can dislike some black people!

Let's talk about the movie and, because it is worth it, about its press and promotion. Certainly, the starter of this thread has a point. As a documentary, based on it's poster and promotion, it didn't seem very profound or interesting to me in Mar del Plata Internatrional Film Festival this year, but I went to see it thinking it would be an entertaining way to spend the time. I expected only more MTV commercialized and predigested crap, with pretty colors. I found a really good movie, certainly not "one of the best docummentaries ever made" (that's realy a LOT to say), but a sensitive, curious and VERY personal insight on the social phenomena it records. Some may not like La Chappelle's visual style, but it certainly is his, and that's a true artist's signature (you see it, you know it's his). It is a manipulative film, it's reliance on montage makes it evident, and the only place it is badly used (it's clear in the fact people notices it and talks about it, thus meaning it didn't go through as the rest of it)is the african dancing scene. That scene is for me completely justified, since it doesn't try to make any point beyond the explicit one, they are part of a same story, things linger in the recedes of social memory, and it suggests an association (not genetical, not cultural, only what you see).

The real forte of the film is in its way of documenting from the purely visual, without the need to rely on the voiceover or the excessive verbosity. It's purely cinematographic, saying what it wants to say through images and montage. And its message is effective, since La Chapelle's MTVness and videoclip visual style permeates and enters in dialogue with the culture it tries to narrate, making it an integral part of the movie.

See it, it's good, even if it seems silly and commercial from its press.

reply

very well said. and kill_bill_is_ill, how the HELL can you judge a movie by its cover. its sounds cliche but thats seriously what u just did. wat was even wrong with the cover anyway?

reply

okay lets be real.
you wont understand the movie unless you understand the culture and the pain behind the dancing. not its not like you got served because that film was just a show of flashy b-boy dancing.
bassically a popcorn film for white people who
A. think they are black
B. think they know black poeple
or
C. are mentally retarded
Rize is gutteral, more soul filled. it doesnt need to rely on a cameo from lil kim or the acting skills of b2k. its beyond real, its emotional and heavy.
white people whith closed minds like you wont get it.
now go watch grease or something.

reply

I totally agree. I'm not a fan of dance, meaning that I don't care to watch dance movies because they just don't interest me. I've seen the cover for Rize several times in Hollywood Video. One day I decided to rent it, since there was nothing better to rent. I was completely blown away by the vibe, the adrenalin, and the passion. I had no idea that Krump Dancing started in LA. I loved the way David showed everything as a progression or an evolutionary step forward beginning with Clown'n. The African dance montage was quite impressive considering these inner city youth had no idea of the similarities of their dance style and traditional African ceremonies. I wasted no time in adding this film to my collection. I also plan to purchase Clowns in the Hood, and Krumped.

I don't know if dancing would have deterred me from gang-banging or selling drugs, but it's good to know no matter how outrageous and creative, we are coming up with solutions for our own salvation. This is truly a powerful film for those of us who understand the environment or reality these kids have to deal with. I found my outlet in art, that's how I stopped gang-banging and selling, I can relate. Mannamedwest314 has it right. You won't be able to understand this film, unless you truly understand the environment. To compare this movie to You Got Served is absurd. That just shows that idiots have now discovered the ancient art of typing. And the cover is incredible.

I think you're missing the point, buddy.
While "you got served" *technically speaking* involves acting and a pretty metodical filmmaking and *conceptually speaking* is a film aimed at the kiddies, "Rize" is a DOCUMENTARY, which means that none of what was filmed was rehearsed too much before, the freedom of the "actors" (because they were not actors, they were dancers) was more present. It all happened THEN, at the shooting.
