Is Emile Griffith alive? What does he think?

Is Emile Griffirth still alive? I can't find any information about him dying or where he'd be today. If so, does anyone know what he thinks about the movie and did he have any input in it?

Its so cool that you live down the street from him. It'll be interesting to get his perspective about how this fight changed his career. I'm looking forward to this.

I think it will be great to hear more from the champ.
I can only imagine the incredible insight he has into this really awesome fight...

Talk about an event that shocked the world....

In the film, does he open up and come out with his sexuality? I heard the film explores that Emile Griffith is gay.

Is he an openly gay man now?

reply

From what I know, he still does not openly admit anything about his sexuality.
I think he is still living in the shadow of the stigma.

do you want to run into junior just be by his house by 1pm he leaves to go to the gym then. But not today he is in georgia By the way you are in hempstead li right

reply

It was great to hear him, and know that he is still a functioning human being.
That film showed that he really had a long career...
Quite a life, quite a movie.

After all these years, it was so great to see old film clips of Emile's bouts
and pictures of Emile on the cover or "Ring" Magaine.

If anybody ever watched the two Emile Griffith - Joey Archer middlweight bouts
it was poetry in motion.

The best part of the Emile Griffith story was Emile getting together with
Benny Paret Jr.

reply

It's a documentary about his career and he is interviewed throughout the film. This is his story and he's a great guy who suffered through some tragic circumstances. Well worth your time when it gets its cable premiere on the USA network.

reply

I'm guessing that you've seen it already, correct??

There are so many different issues that will be presented in this film. Including, though not limited to rumors of Griffith's sexuality. It'll be interesting to see how they handle it.

reply

He was supposedly bisexual, right? Did he ever admit to it?

reply

There is an op-ed article in the New York Times about him and the documentary. He does say, at the end, that he has had relations with both men and women, and wishes to participate in this year's Gay Pride Parade.

Griffith fought Benny “Kid” Paret 3 times, the last time on March 24, 1962 for the World Welterweight Title. I watched that fight on TV.

Paret had called Griffith a "maricón" (queer) before their previous fight 6 months earlier. In the March bout, Griffith pounded Paret unmercifully. Paret died 10 days later.

I vividly remember watching that fight, but it was not until just now that I learned about the rest of the story about Griffith’s proclivities.

Actually, I think that word is alot stronger than just "queer".

I will be interested to see what they do with the sexuality issue in the movie tomorrow night. Will Griffith actually admit to anything?

Also, I can't wait to see that great footage from the 1960's.

Actually he called him that at the weigh-in, and a brawl almost broke out.
At least according to Bert Sugar, a well know Boxing expert, who was at both the weigh-in and fight.

And that word is a little stronger than just queer.

Re: "And that word is a little stronger than just queer."

Maybe. But if you want the precise translation for 'maricon', it means 'sissy' or 'cry baby'.
