Is the queen really that contempuous of Charles?

I was appalled when Charles abjectly asked "Why do they hate us so much?" and the queen replied, with consummate snideness, "It's not us they hate." What a horrid thing for a mother to tell her son, that he's hated, as if he deserved it. Is it true that she feels such contempt for him, I wonder?

I suppose we love our kids but we don't always like them?

She is from the old world, stiff upper lip and tradition (although she apparently has a warm nature and sense of humour), Charles is more of a 'modernist' in his attitudes.

no of course not. She disapproved very strongly of his relationship with Camilla, and the way he allowed ti ot undermine his marriage.. but he's her son and she loves him. And I think by the time of Di's death, she had very litlte sympathy with Diana

I believe the line was "not us dear."

She means that the public hated him for the way he treated Diana with his affair with Camilla.
