Charles' Reaction...

To Diana's death. I found him to be too sad for a man who had an arranged marriage and was known to have a mistress for most of his official relationship. Would he have been that upset?

reply

They weren't on the best of terms, but he never wanted anything to happen to her. I think he was sadder for the boys though.

reply

Diana had many faults, and the marriage was a sham. But she was still the mother of his children and never did anything to make him hate her.

There is still a level of respect and care for a person no matter that he didn't love her. They shared some life together, had 2 sons together and most importantly had the public focused intensely on them and had such scrutiny placed on them even for a short period of time together.

I agree with Brunhilda that he was concerned for his children and with Leesha that he didn't wish Diana harm. I also can't help but think he was somewhat selfishly sad for himself because Diana's death would mean he might have had to wait longer than he had anticipated to marry Camilla. The situation reminds me of the theory that Elizabeth I never married Robert Dudley because of the suspicion surrounding his wife's death.

I don't think he was THAT concerned about the relationship with Camilla at that point. I think he did love Diana, but was never in love with her. At the time of her death they were on good terms with each other and Diana had a good relationship with the Queen and occasionally would visit her at Buckingham. However, during that summer with all the antics with Dodi put her in a somewhat bad light and took some attention away from Charles and Camilla. From what I understand is that they were planning to be more public with the relationship and Charles was planning on giving her a birthday party, but was cancelled upon Diana's death.
When the accident occurred, Camilla was the first person Charles called and she was trying to comfort him by insisting that Diana was in the best shape health-wise with Charles agreeing. When Diana died, he called her back crying and Camilla was shocked and she then turned the attention to the children. According to the source I read he did briefly consider their relationship, and Camilla also alluded to the nature of the accident and weather it really was an accident which confused Charles.I honestly do not think he was even thinking about such things at the time, but he was a scared for his safety.According to witnesses his reaction to seeing her was much more dramatic than the film portrayed. Before he arrived in Paris with Diana's sister, he went through some lengths to make sure Diana looked her best. He was insistent that she was to be wearing her favorite earrings and looking like she was alive for his own sake, I guess. When actually seeing her lying in her coffin, he freaked out when the air conditioner jumped on causing Diana hair to move and the nurse thought he would faint. He apparently was angry with the staff at first and congratulated them for their failure, but soften when he realized his error. He stood with Diana's sisters crying with them.

reply

She was the mother of his young children and someone he had known for a long time. She died suddenly and tragically. Of course he would have been upset.

reply

Why would her death mean he'd have to wait longer to marry Camilla? In the royal family they are traditionally not permitted to remarry after divorce while the first spouse is still alive. If anything, her death freed him to marry Camilla.

reply

How do you explain The Princess Royal remarrying while her husband still lived.

reply

They had to get married in the Church of Scotland because it was not permitted in the Church of England (The Queen is the head of the Church of England).

reply

He would have been sad for his children's sake, he would have known that their mother's death would be a very hard thing for them.
