Bangor, Maine = Atlanta, Georgia?

I enjoyed this movie for its quirky humor and interesting characters. The locations really distracted me, however. I currently live outside Boston and recognized several of the small towns. As I watched the final scenes set in Atlanta, I couldn't help but think that the Victorian and Gothic architecture and evergreen trees did not quite "fit." The final, climactic conversation in the middle of an "Atlanta" park was almost completely lost on me as my jaw dropped and I quickly realized the true shooting location: Broadway Park in Bangor, Maine (my hometown). Outside of Stephen King flicks, I've never seen a movie use Bangor as a location. While cool (to me), I couldn't help but wonder...(1) Why choose a northern city for a southern setting? (2) What is the filmmaker's connection to Bangor (it's not evident in their biographies)? (3) Why didn't they just modify the script to have the parents reside in Bangor? There was no particular importance given to Atlanta in the script...all they really needed was a destination for their road trip, so why not Maine?

Does anybody have any inisght or other thoughts on the shooting locations?

Considering the budget they had to work with on this video it probably means these were locations within an easy, inexpensive drive. As for why not change the location I don't know but maybe they wrote it that way and saw no reason to change since most people wouldn't pick up on it as you did.

Yeah . . . almost the entire film was shot in Maine. I worked on the film. We needed a house we could get for free where the parents lived. The lead actress' sister lives there . . . and the park was nearby. It was a budget thing. In fact, we got all the locations for free or next-to-nothing.

All the travelogue stuff with the road signs and such was shot over the course of a week several weeks after principal photography wrapped.

As for Atlanta . . . just needed the "distance" from Brooklyn to Atlanta so the story would play. At least, that's what I surmised. Can't believe you picked this up . . . very keen eye. :-)
