Is Rhett an "obnoxious poseur" and "fake hippie"?

I thought he was just an annoying idiot; but this possibility, raised by Mick LaSalle's review, is an interesting one:

Rhett is an obnoxious poseur, a fake hippie whose New Age banter is mask for unrealized hostility, opportunism and selfishness.
