So, paralyzed guys can be irritating MTV types as well

The one thing that kept crossing my mind as I watched this OVERRATED film, was that paralyzed guys can be just as irritating as the clowns you see on ESPN's X-Games and MTV. I guess in that sense, the films does do a good job of showing us that just because someone is paralyzed, does not mean they can't be a dick just like everybody else. I wonder if that was the point?

I mean, specifically, this film, as opposed to other disability films which are welcomed, such as "My Left Foot". Could it be that this film really drives home the point, as no other disability film has ever done, that people in wheelchairs can have lives that are fulfilling, sexually and otherwise, and that being disabled does not mean that you are simply stuck in a dead end existence, with no chance of enjoying life?

Perhaps that idea, and the idea of looking at disabled people differently, really shakes up and bothers some able-bodied people.

The guys in this move weren't "annoying MTV types" or jerks or anything like that. They were just jocks. Guys who are highly competitive and intense about their sport. Watching it, I couldnt help but think of how closely they resembled my teamates from when I played highschool football. Even the Candian coach reminded me of my coach.

I think you have got the point of the film exactly right. Jocks are jocks! No matter if they are in wheelchairs or not.

Just for the record: I am a non-jock in a wheelchair.

Please don't call My Left Foot a "disability film". It isn't, any more than Inside I'm Dancing or One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest are "disability films". It may be a film featuring a disabled protagonist but that doesn't make it a disability film.

I totally agree with the OP. I wanted to see this film when I read about it. Then I saw a preview on MTV, and heard them yelling and bitching and fighting and placing undue importance on some sport, just like abler-bodied jerks. I wouldn't want to see a movie about any jerk-jocks, whether they are disabled or not. I think that means they are being treated like anyone else. It would be worse to go see the movie just because you felt you had to BECAUSE it was about disabled people.

I just wanted to say that this movie moved me in such a way it can't be described. I also think the original poster who started this topic is an idiot. This film is not 'overrated'. The people in the film are just real human beings, I never saw any 'irritating' traits in these people's personalities. Theyre just real people like I said before, real people can be 'assholish' these guys were just extremly into their sport, and were just intense. HOW COULD YOU EVEN THINK THIS? BY THE END OF THE MOVIE theyre huggin love ones and you can see true disappointment, my heart is with these guys...
ugh i cant even think straight.

reply

I agree with you. A lot of people are missing the point. Murderball was NOT just about a variation of Rugby. It was an eye-opener into the psyci of people overcoming a disability. For me the film proved the point that disabled does NOT equal helpless. It also proves the point that not all disabled people are "nice". There was one point where someone asked if one of the players became a jerk after his injury. The answer was that he was a jerk long before. For me, it proved that all people, whether able-bodied or not, have there own personality. For anyone who thinks this should not be shown because of language, well you are SO off the mark!

These guys are FAR from MTV types trust me.... this isn't the scripted "Real World" !

Andy Cohn is my brother in law and I've known both him and Scott for the last six years

Yep, original poster is way off, or just a bitter, sexless, dispassionate cynic. This movie is about so many things: betrayal, healing, coming of age, coming to terms, living in another's shadow...so much more. It was inspiring, gripping (in parts), touching, funny, raunchy...you name it, this movie had it. All that, and tons of swearing! What more could you ask?

[deleted]

blah blah blah Guess I am just dumb then. Apparently, you are the expert. Just giving the original poster as much tongue in cheek as he gave. Do you seriously think the point of the movie was to show that quadriplegics can be dicks, too?

If original poster did not like the movie, it is fine to say so. However, to boil it down to the pointless end that he did simply insults my intelligence. Of course, by your recount, I am dumb. So. There you have it.

If you will notice, I gave the reader the option of agreeing with either --- the poster was way off OR (NOTE THE "OR" HERE) a bitter, sexless, dispassionate cynic.

Geez, buddy, take a chill pill.

hahhahahahha i laugh at ppl who think all disabled ppl are nice...

i mean if u put a disabled guy or girl in front of a camera there gonna be all "i have overcome my disability and bla bla bla" then off camera all they do is bitch moan and complain that they cant do anything

trust me...im the daughter of a pretty-able-sports-playing disabled man but STILL he always asks other ppl to do stuff for him cuz its "too much effort" to get up off the couch

there all a bunch of phonys in interviews and shi t

one of the biggest a ssholes i know is disabled..he mistreated me and my mom but everyone else loves him because he "overcame" obstacles

no1 cares what hes really like or anything

ppl need to wake up

ummm...... i really dont know how to begin
you claim that if "u put a disabled guy or girl in front of a camera there gonna be all "i have overcome my disability and bla bla bla" then off camera all they do is bitch moan and complain that they cant do anything"
well, i have a disability and i have never asked anyone for sympathy just because of it. i want to live my own life, and not let anyone help me unless i need it. you are basing your opinion of people with disabilities on ONE bad experience you had. now, this person may be an a**hole but he doesnt represent the entire disabled community. i would ask that you do a little research into people like judy heumann, ed roberts, and justin dart jr., and then tell me what you're opinion of people with disabilities is. i would just like to also note that if one person of hispanic, asian, or african origin was rude to you, would you assume that everyone else of their race is?
it's people like you that keep our country from not moving foward and embracing diversity

well then i applaud you for not asking for sympathy..but on the other hand i think ur dumb for what u said after that.

first of all..i dont believe i ever said ONE experience....in fact i know about 20-30 disabled ppl who want sympathy and want ppl to do everything for them. i've grown up around them. i've met hundreds. not just ONE. so i think u need to think b4 u reply to a post. so again your whole idea about me disliking a whole race b/c ONE person does not apply because like ive said i've met A LOT of disabled people who are very phony when in the public view.

so im glad ur not like that but i really didnt think the rest of your post was necessary or actually applied to me

You hit on something I've encountered- the vast majority of disabled persons aren't like that but there are a small faction who are seem to get all the attention. One of the more frustrating things about dealing with my own disability was finding out the hard way that that small "faction" of disabled persons being a**holes has some people totally fawning over them and totally excusing their obnoxious antics, all the while showing contempt for the rest of the disabled community on the grounds that they're "stealing" attention from that select few. I've experienced firsthand having people in support roles working with disabled persons very blatantly picking and choosing the people they get to work with, and choosing the crass, obnoxious ones over the "average Joes or Janes". The rest of us see how rude and arrogant they are but the ones doing all the fawning just gush about what "colorful characters" and fun people they are.

I knew a girl many years ago at a local college who had celebral palsy, and used a wheelchair. Thing is, only the staff and student helpers at the college's disability support office seemed to be the only ones *not* seeing that she was all over campus in her power chair showing off and almost hitting people, and that her speech impediment magically dissapeared when she wanted to cuss someone out. To be on the recieving end of her profanity-laden tirades all one had to do was confront her about how she was acting like a spoiled brat. And those who *did* criticize her, other disabled students included, got banned from the disability support office and from using their services.

I think what might have bothered some people about the film was the impression that somehow everyone just loves the crass and obnoxious manner those guys seem to conduct themselves

Very true, I dunno why but you almost expect to like someone whose handicapped. I guess people have a hard time disliking them because they feel bad for them.

I will admit as the movie went on I like some of them more than initially, but overall most of they were arrogant pricks.

There were times in the movies where the guys could be jerks. That one guy was acting like a jerk because his girlfriend's aunt mistatkley told people that he was a special olympics particpant. The guy got upset and made fun mentally challenged people and the special olympics. The guy missing arms and legs seemed pretty nice.
