Yea, guess those reviews are really awful, LOL (please note the sarcasm)

I thought it was pretty good but you could see how the original concept was driven by one too many viewings of Reservoir Dogs -- only instead of cops waiting for them outside the warehouse, it's a bunch of zombies.

Ultimately nihilistic, Last Rites was the perfect companion piece to 28 Weeks Later, the movie I watched the same day as this.

The closing shots of meteors crashing to Earth was jarring. Loved it!

reply

yeah i watched this thinkin it was gonna be really corny and poor acting and stuff like that but it was actually entertaining and not too bad for a low budget movie, just give it a chance.

reply

i just watched it and i thought it was pretty good

reply

Hey, the AllThingsZombie review - that's me. :D

To answer your question, if you haven't read the review, no I don't think the film was awful. I don't see it as a classic either but not awful. Not even by a stretch.

reply

Every reviewer who gave this movie a positive review is a hack. The makers of this film probably spent all their money on bribing reviewers so they would have a few decent quotes to throw on the cover. This movie is perhaps the worst movie I've ever seen...No, definitely.

reply

I wish it only sucked, I loss an hour of my life watching this rip off piece of trash. It was only an hour because there was no other thing to do than to see it fast forward... not even boobs for being a Z-Grade film, terrible.

reply

I thought it was great until they killed reggie banister's character. After reggie's character died it was just ok. If reggie stayed through the whole movie it would have been a classic. "Thats american money not pesos"

reply

Hey man look at it this way, it was either this or wank your brother off again.

"What's this war in the heart of Nature?"

reply

Yep, the movie sucked.

Pure Vomit. The worst movie I have ever seen in my life.

My boyfriend and I were laughing at the actors, certain scenes, etc!! He also said it looks like an amateur filmed it. Or it looked like a college project or something!! But it was terrible!! And sooooo cheesy!!

reply

worst. movie. ever.

reply

I'm afraid I'm on the negative side. I also rented expecting a super gory super fun crappy horror movie, and what I got was neither what I expected and it didn't wow me either, it was just boring...I didn't even finish it.

Maybe it was my mood too, i might give it another try another day

reply

You guys can't be this thick. The movie is funny from start to finish. Your remark about stereotypes is apt but misplaced. It's called parody.

No one saw the humor? One line at random: "The bums are eating the cops man. They must be hungry." Now that's funny and delivered well. It's also some sort of Marxist "remark". I ain't saying this is a masterpiece, but if it's not viewed by way of it's light-hearted premise it's not being viewed properly.

And what about when the white-bread weather man (Dick Weatherman) and his wife get attacked? The zombies are eating his wife and are ignoring him. What does he do? He GETS OUT of his car and runs away down the tracks instead of speeding off. He's in L.A., the Land of freeways and smog where the car is king. No one goes anywhere on foot - he doesn't use his car to flee Zombies.

One second he's telling the zombie-bum to watch the paint and as soon as civilization begins to erode he abandoms consumer culture. A tad too late I might add. A joke at the expense of the times we live in if ever there was one. :)

Much in this film is intentionally satirical. It follows a great tradition. Romero's films were "social commentary" thinly disguised as "monster movie".

Lighten up. Open your eyes. Don't be dumb.

I believe my IQ dropped too much to put into words how AWFUL this piece of trash was. I respect the production company for completing this garbage, but thats about it. We're most of you involved in this movie? I'm just wondering because of the high rating it recieved, it being a 4 n' all.
To say this 'movie' sucks is giving it too much credit.

reply

"You guys can't be this thick"

You cannot actually be that pretentious. There isn't a chance in hell that the director of this piece of *beep* can even spell Marxist, let alone use a Marxist remark (lmao) in a film.

And as for the funny line about "The bums are eating the cops" sure it was at most, mildly amusing the first time that they said it, but even that scrap of humour couldnt be left alone as it got repeated at least 5 times, until it had stopped being funny and once again the spoon you'd just eaten your ben and jerrys with was becoming extremely tempting to gauge out your own eyes with.

Anyone who finds any sense of intelligence or wit in this film needs to see a doctor as soon as possible, i would also recommend sterilisation. Now please, stop trying to find things in this film that just arent there.

reply

YOU NEED TO GET STERILIZED SILLY LOL just kidding..

Of course it wasn't a Neo-Marxist manifesto, but saying that it simply sucks is just as wrong. Of course it wasn't brilliant, but they did SO many things right, considering. Shot in film in 2006, unique premise, and some very horrific violence. That last bit is subjective, I guess, but I sincerely found the gore to be very unpleasant, which is exactly what it should be. Rightly direct to dvd, but considering that it WAS direct to dvd, surprisingly good.

Edit: WTF made me think this was shot on film? It's so obviously not. Never mind. I forfeit reproductive rights.

reply

Evil Dead was budget indy

reply

hahaha, i'd debate "unique premise" a little [EDIT: See 'Undead' for example, although granted its of a different tone]. But I still thought this film sucked a lot, but didn't hit that 'Anacondas' or 'D-war' esque level of um, "suckage" :D, where it sucked so much that it was genius. And you may keep your reproductive rights, just this once i'll let you off :P.

reply

Even though I didn't care for this movie, I have to admit I did laugh my butt off that the weatherman got out of his car to escape the zombies that were eating his girlfriend.

reply

This is up there on my worst movies ever list. Last Rites huh, too late for last rites on this film ... how about a very quick cremation. Man it was pathetic even for a low-budget film.

reply

Nowhere near enough killing in it.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

I watched this movie one day when I was sick with a cold/flu/sinus infection or whatever. When I'm sick, I take some cold medicine and some "herbal medicine", lay in bed and watch whatever movie i land on, in my 40 premium movie channels I pay for.
Sometimes, I catch something good and watch a movie that isn't necessarily good but I enjoy it anyway. I hate the term "guilty pleasure" because hey, you like what you like. You know it's not a good film but you still find it entertaining....
Gangs of the Dead is that for me. When did they rename the movie? When I saw it on The Movie Channel, it was called Gangs of the Dead, Not Last Rites. I like the former better than the latter.

Anyway, The movie is bad but if I saw in a bargain bin for 1$, I'd break 5$ for that.
