Significance of spontaneous musicians?

What was the significance of the characters spontaneously, out of context, playing classical music?

I think that was when David Lynch took over the directors chair. Yeah I didn't like that at all, it felt like a copout to me. Like instead of having a good powerful scene they just said the heck with it we'll just make it artsy. I'm probably not the best person to answer this question but I am a huge ww2 buff and have seen almost every ww2 film there is and this one took me about 3 tries to watch so it probably didn't connect with me lol. I just saw the film "north face" that film was as boring as this but atleast it picked up towards the end and became great.

I hated this. Suddenly we had a supernatural foreshadowing element, which has nothing to do with the world of the story.

I guess this worked in the stage version, where audiences are more willing to suspend belief and take something as poetically symbolic...but frankly, the wind went out of this movie for me the second time it happened. It's like, "Please."

This film was poorly translated from stage. The band popping up works great in theater but not in film.
