What was the Not washing hair thing about?

Can anyone shed some light on why she didnt wash her hair? Did it have any particular significance or was it just the case of a manifestation of her depression or dissatisfaction with life?

reply

she seemed depressed, but I wondered if maybe it was a subconscious rejection of her husband becuase he made shampoos.

reply

Didn't someone like Sylvia Plath (Spelling?) not wash their hair because it would just end up dirty again.. I don't know, I have a feeling there might be some underlying reference to a feminist literature figure.

reply

Yes, in The Bell Jar. Why shower when she was just going to have to do it again the next day. The part in the movie reminded me of this, but I didn't think it fit her character. It was a little too Psychology 101 for me.

reply

MENOPAUSE-unfortunately, it happens to the best of us

reply

I'm going thru it right now and I find that I shower more. I haven't had any desire to be a grub.

reply

Me too....I used to get in the shower and just stand there....I found it
very soothing. Didn't feel depressed or anything. I think it was
perhaps an innate way of dealing with the angst or whatever of getting
through that period...haha, no pun intended. I didn't take any drugs
of any kind so I'm grateful my body told me what I needed.

reply

I remember once reading that Kurt Cobain felt the same way.

reply

That explains a lot, like his lank greasy hair.

reply

Yeah it was something about how her arms got tired and that itd just get dirty again.

they talk about it in the special features-she wasn't washing her hair as a symptom/part of her experience of menopause or peri-menopause.

reply

What does that mean? How did they explain Menopause was causing her to not wash her hair?

reply

She said she was tired all the time. Hormones are powerful and hers were plummeting. Also, when you hit the 40s, you do whatever you feel like doing and say *beep* the rest if it's not on your priority list.

reply

It kind of p****d me off that this entire movie went by without someone telling her that you can go to a salon and pay someone to wash your damn hair for you!

reply

I totally agree with the last two responses :) Especially since I'm a woman in my 40's.

Loved this movie...

reply

I think she was also suffering from depression and just didn't care.

reply

yes she could've gone to a salon to wash her hair but then again she would be too tired to go.

remember when aniston's character said that the person she works for is probably unemployed and that he's paying her because he is probably depressed because he's unemployed and doesn't feel like cleaning.

it's a cycle you can't get out of. first you're depressed and then you're too depressed to wash your hair and then you're depressed because your hair looks awful.

reply

It's actually very normal for some menopausal women to get extremely exhausted, tired, irratable and depressed. Many women just pop a pill and feel better (I personally wouldn't recommend that). But hormonal changes, and aging can create all sorts of odd behavior.

reply

It's not either/or.

Menopausal women can suffer clinical depression.

Women inclined toward depression go through menopause.

That's why it can be such a bitch to treat; the symptoms can align very closely.

reply

Um, what, "Pill" would that be? Are you a woman?

haha, just read this and said to myself "so true". Lol...

... this is a maid speaking by the way

Good point. Especially since she could AFFORD to go to a salon!

I've seen the movie a few times (there's something about it that I'm very intrigued with), and I've always thought it was because she was in such a blue mood (I'm not sure depression is completely accurate).

Granted, I never read/saw the details that said menopause was meant to be in the script. But it still never really come off that that was the reason. She seemed to me to be low about things in her life (and her 43rd birthday that was mentioned by Aaron), and that can cause people to neglect themselves.

reply

43 seems young to be menopausal. hormones going down is very serious. How women dealt with this 100 years or even 60 years ago... beyond me.

Obviously she was in the middle of all that and had no clue what was wrong. She also said she didn't feel like herself? She should have gone to a doc, but it seemed like her friends were too young to understand or give advice.

She kept making fun of everything. She was most definitely not ok. And she was a designer???

reply

You can be creative and depressed at the same time. Your art may become darker, but it's still creative. As for washing her hair,yes-she could afford it. But since she sees it as futile, maybe she didn't think she deserved to be pampered. And when people keep telling you something is wrong with you,the natural reaction is to rebel and hold on to your wrongness-since it's your's and nobody elses'.

reply

She herself talks about her hair washing issue in the film. She says that she doesn't feel pretty and none of the many different shampoos she has does anything to make her hair look nice. I have a feeling that she would not get ANYTHING good from a salon hair washing. Her hair has gone through some kind of change as she aged - and she talks about her hair and its problems several times. It's not that she 'lets it go.'

As for feeling tired: she has a company. She designs and sells clothes. They are in stores. Just as her husband has a company, so does she. They have a child. Yet, they are not rich. I think she feels isolated from people aside from that very very small circle of friends, and has started to feel ineffective and invisible. Her husband is supportive but she's exhausted. She's taken on too many things and hasn't grasped the brass ring, even after all that work. That may account for the feelings of frustration and anger.

reply

I have the DVD and McDormand explains that her character is going through Menopause which explains the emotional anger ,depression and self neglect.
