I am hoping to watch this movie in the next week. I found it in the bipolar section of the library. As a bipolar person who has experienced manic episodes, all I can tell you without watching it is the following. Manic people (who are not medicated), believe that they can do almost anything. They have an over inflated sense of their abilities. For example, when I feel that way I think that I can write a book. I like writing and could probably do it, but it takes that manic feeling to push me to try. I suspect that is what is going on here. He really thinks he is great at music/singing and unless medicated (which makes you feel very dull and pushed down), he will not see his music the way others do. Keep in mind, As another artistic personality, this condition is very hard to deal with, I personally can't do anything artistic (it seems) while medicated.
I haven't listened to his music and am not a music expert, I just have knowledge of his mental condition and plan to watch the movie to learn more about his bipolar experiences. Anyone interested in learning about the different forms this condition takes (it varies from mild to severe) will find this easy to read link interesting.
