Good movie, now who benefits from...

Who benefits from the lousy system portrayed in this movie? Not me. I have interacted with the cops and their friends and I am not comfortable with the idea of trusting them.
On an up note, this really is a well crafted documentary. The lady who oversaw it's creation talked with an enthusiastic crowd at the NuArt therater and acknowedged the luck factor in the picture coming out as good as it did. Also people who want to do the right thing being willing to participate. Is that luck? What can you do, in a social sense? Stand up to bad authority, when able (if you are too risk averse please recall the old adage, "Anything you do can get you killed, including doing nothing."), and asnswer the call to jury duty, and vote responsibly on election day.

Lots of people benefit from the lousy system. The victim & their family get a (false) sense of security, believing their attacker is locked away. The prosecutors gain job prestige based on their numbers of convictions, wrongful or not. Police get to stop looking for the real perpetrators since they've found someone to pin it on.

It's messed up. Makes me want to cry, honestly. I can't believe that our government can just take away the livelihoods of so many people, and after realizing their mistake (in the few cases that actually DO get exonerated) just release them with no support or any sort of financial compensation for ruining their lives.

And the true assailant continues to roam freely.
