the fire

I had the odd feeling that Sommers started the fire to vindicate himself. I haven't read the books so they may indicate otherwise.

Why was he on the ship alone? Would have really valued captaincy of a vessel that was considered too unseaworthy to leave the harbor? How do you know he was trapped by the flame as opposed to just staying on board as a sort of martyr?
Vindicated in that he kept insisting the ship was in danger of burning but it never did--until he fired it himself.
Just a thought (or two)
