What's the meaning?

Is it just that his father is dead? I don't get it. Also, why did they make the boy look so ugly?

Its story of innocence and war, the boy pretends to be living the exciting life of fighting with his father at war, when he gets home he finds what he thinks is a gift. In reality his father has died.

Its kind of a slice of life story and the attraction is the fact that this is a defining moment in a young life, and that we know whats happening but the child doesnt understand.

Images of a poor ghost town in contrast to expensive war machines, playing in a crashed plane, and making small toy soldiers out of debis... there is a fairly strong message about how the war has affected peoples live.

The kid is ugly... most would call it 'character'
