Infantile Reviews of Herzog Films

Why are we so totally plagued by infantile reviews of the films of Werner Herzog?
It's hard to find ONE mature intellect who can write a lucid review of Herzog's vision. I guess it's a sign of the times; if folks can't even tell the Emperor has no clothes, how could they POSSIBLY understand Herzog?

Go back to school, CHILDREN.

Well, greatness and genius famously terrify people. Too bad.

AMEN

Hard to forgive filmcritic.com's one-star review of Aguirre. And the fact than non of Herzog's docs this year got an Oscar nomination (especially Grizzly Man) is stupefying.

people are dumb.

And the people that are in the business of making more people are the dumbest. And they are the bulk of the voting public.. nasty breeders with their suburban twisted skulls whistling in the wind. I was shocked grizzly man was such a non event with the viewing public.

reply

One star for Aguirre, unless it is out of one and a half stars, something is seriously wrong there.

I would argue that Herzogs filmaking will never be populist and therefore never win an oscar (so what!). Its based on outsiders, usually, plus his approach to film making is so beyond the Academy and its voters. Oscar nominations are now pointless, sycophantic pats on the back from the clique of Hollywood. Needless to say, he shows us that it is okay to follow your dreams, be an individual and risk everything to find inner satisfaction. What stood out for me in Grizzly Man was Herzogs idea that life on earth is not based on harmony and balance but chaos and murder. That is the balance.

the funny thing about one of the reviews is that the writer stated his favourite scene was when the falling drop of rain reflected the image of the waterfall. When actually that was not a drop of rain at all. that was glycerin that Herzog planted there. Herzog is open about creating shots for his documentaries and even taking multiple shots for when the people in the film are speaking. He discussed this with a couple of friends who met him in L.a at the last film fest. I quite like that about him. It creates an element of fantasy that i really enjoy watching.

Chaos and murder, yes. It reminds me of one of his monologues in "Burden of Dreams" as he describes the jungle while filming Fitzcarraldo. I love his work, his unique perspective, and his passion.
While I'd like for him to be more frequently recognized, I feel special being among a small number who appreciate his work.

Pretentious imbeciles.
