As someone who loved the book...

...I was really excited when I heard a movie had been made. I actually discovered it when a friend who is in to film-making asked me if I'd read anything that would make a good movie. I was, however, deeply disappointed :-(

Some (to me) key plot-lines and scenes were missing. Complex characters and their relationships with others were reduced to 2D non-entities and all the satiricle elements were gone. But more than this, I just couldn't accept Edward Furlong in the central role.

The character of Brandon is meant to be handsome, charming, seductive and charismatic. He is also meant to look "just like Jesus!" - ie, in this case, what most people imagine Jesus looked like. Brandon in the movie was a dull teenager with a scruffy surfer-dude look - I just couldn't believe such a person could aquire such a following! Even his motivation was changed from the book to provide a handy, cliche horror plot!

All in all, a very disappointing movie based on a fantastic book!
