The End of Pixar's Golden Era?

Pixar had an undeniable streak of quality, innovation, and genius. They raised the bar and kept it high (albeit with a hiccup or two). Their last effort was solid, but I think their reigning magic is fading. Did Toy Story 3 mark the end of an era?

The cars series was always mixed in its reception, cars 2 just continued that general style, you can only polish a turd but so much ;)

Brave, god I don't get why it has been received so poorly. I loved the film, as did my girls. Is it as deep as toy story? No, it was a new IP and it tried to change things up. It wasn't everyone's favorite, but it was FAR from a bad movie. It was better than the majority of stuff out there.

Brave did win best animated film, so that shows it was a good movie. Sure it isn't on the same level as the Toy Story films, but it was better than Cars. I don't think the golden era of Pixar is over. We have to wait and see how the Monsters INC prequel and Nemo sequel play out.

im surprised to see someone say that. i thought the movies pixar has come out with were actually pretty enjoyable.

brave was a fun story but there werent any memorable characters/scenes that really stuck out to me. It was a really beautiful looking movie though in terms of colour and animation quality. I mean, they must have needed an entire team of animators and physics experts just to make that bouncy red hair so realistic lmao.

The only movies that i think fit in the catagory of being not very well planned is the cars franchise. I like how pixar picks inanimate objects that feel alive or somewhat sentient when ur a kid, but cars just felt cheesey and weird to me. i mean, toys were still toys in toy story, but in cars, its like the entire world is run by the cars themselves, and even though they can repair/build eachother, no one has any arms, they all use their wheels as primitive stumps lmao.

Cars just isnt as good because it doesnt really make any realistic sense. I realize we are talking about cartoons but the magic of pixar is giving us a story from a unique perspective. Cars is just a new world run by cars. How does that even come about? Did they take over after the human population all died? Its just kinda weird when you think about the world being inhabited by cars designed to carry people (seats, steering wheels, etc.) but there are no people.

the thing about cars though is it is a gold mine for merchandise. It was something like 3/4 of all kids in america ages like 5-13 own a cars tshirt and wore it at least once a week. The toys are cheap ass hell to make and so many kids like them. Kids already like to play with cars, and now the cars are characters they recognize instead of just liking the most flashy.

Pixar has had a very good track record for such a short time-span being in the motion picture industry. Cars 2 and Brave being the only serious disappointments critically/box-office wise.

reply

It kind of is. I haven't really enjoyed any of the recent movies they've released like Cars 2 and Brave. Monsters University looks like it might suck, too.

reply

Yes. I did not enjoy Cars 2 and Brave still feels like Brother Bear does Scotland(btw Brother Bear made me cry, Brave dud not). Plus there seem to be more prequels/sequals out or planbed, and they can't all be as brilliant as TS 2&3. Sadly

Agree. Toy Story 3 is the end of the golden era of Pixar although Cars wasn't that good by Pixar standards. Cars 2 was total crap and Brave was just decent. Monsters University was great but felt like a Dreamworks movie, it doesn't have the heart and magic of the previous Pixar movies.

Umm too early to tell? It's only been 3 years since the majestic Toy Story 3. Maybe we can decide after 10 or 20 years of crappy films.

I agree with OP.
