Dolph Lundgren's Direction...

...was just outstanding. In fact, I would say he is better than Sylvester Stallone who gave him his first exposure in the United States. "The Russian Specialist" was a pretty damn good film.

I just finished watching it again and came here to say the exact same thing. Out of the 5 movies he's directed I think this one has the best direction. Command Performance and The Killing Machine (my other 2 favorite of his) share the same directing style and it's very different from what we see here. Of course this film relies heavily on drama so maybe that's why the shots seem almost artsy. But even when the action begins Dolph manages not to lose his cool and the film flows nicely.

While Dolph seems to take his time setting up the shots in The Russian Specialist, the other 2 efforts I mentioned above seem to go for the "shaky cam" effect. I enjoy that style also since it helps convey a sense of urgency, but while it worked to it's advantage in Command Performance it only seemed to be a quick way out in The Killing Machine. It almost looks like he didn't have enough time to shoot and had to settle for that particular style. Yet still the movie managed to kick ass. I wonder what he could do with an Expendables size budget...
