It's always interesting when Americans decide to comment on British TV Shows. For a start LOG is a a dark comedy, a very dark comedy. The series always was as is the film.

Americans always seem to believe their comedy is better than ours, despite how many American comedians cite British comedy as an influence, and they always seem to disregard their appallingly bad shows like Will & Grace or Dharma & Gregg.

Stupidity isn't a tool.

British comedey writers generally have creative control over their shows in terms of what they can do. Shows like this or Peep Show could never be made in America for a start it would never get commissioned and if it the network would affect what would happen too much. There are very few dark US comedies that I can think of stuff like Freinds or Will & Grace are more the norm, the only one I can think of is Curb Your Enthusiasm a HBO comedy, which therefore doesn't count.

Disgusting and nasty though, I'm guessing the OP has seen none of the series then, but it's no worse than any US gross out comedy.

Stupidity isn't a tool.

What made you people immediately assume that this guy is American? He said nothing about the US, but just made a comment about "british style". I see no evidence that he's American: first, he uses the British spelling of 'humour'. Second the entire subject sentence is completely ungrammatical for American English as WELL as British English: "so, this is humour of british style"? No, that sentence doesn't parse in the US. And the guy's nickname here is 'ferdinand'. It's more likely that he's a non-native speaker of English from some third country.

From this I conclude that you all seem to have reflexively assumed every criticism made of something from your country is from an American. Very strange. This says more about you than of Americans.

For the record, I'm a fan of both British and American humor; there are inspirational geniuses working on both sides of the Atlantic.

reply

Nope, it says more about Americans

reply

There has probably been no American in the thread until me. You can say whatever you want.

reply

Fair point. As I made those comments. However I have seen critcisms like these before from Americans regarding British media, wherein they tend to be very hypocritical.

Im I the only one a little confused by the original posters comment? They are offended by the 'disgusting' nature of the comedy, but label it as being 'even worse than 'Pink Flamingos' - PF being one of the most brilliantly disgusting, offensive, stomach churning films of all time, and genuinely makes TLOGA look like Last of the Summer Wine - people are strange . . .

I was thinking the same thing. How can anyone say any movie is more disgusting than "Pink Flamingo"? I mean, really. That is really just the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a very long time. It honestly makes me doubt they've seen "Pink Flamingo" if they can really say the League has offended them more than flipping "Pink Flamingo" did. lol.

American comedies are *beep* compared to the British.

I am Canadian, I loved the film, perhaps mostly as I am a huge league fan, I'd rather sit back and watch some good british television then american television. I was however slightly dissapointed with the films ending, still loved the film though. so sad royston vasey will be no more...

reply

A lot of our stuff is *beep* too, Two Pints, The IT Crowd and that's just recent - the poor Americans are still suffering with repeats of Last of the Summer Wine, Keeping Up Appearances, Are You Being Served and May to *beep* December.

So let's get our heads out of our arses and remember how much we all enjoyed friends which, by the way, is *beep*

Twicely done. Nice one. In regards to this discussion I would say that animated stuff doesn't count. And I was more on about an American being a hypocrite.

Ummm.... I don't get your point as you don't make it coherently. I like the fact you have managed to completly avoid the point I was making about Hyperdrive and Red Dwarf. Hyperdrive was not original show like you claim.

Stupidity isn't a tool.

reply

[deleted]

They are both similar in that they are both sitcoms set in space, but apart from that they are not very similar.

Red Dwarf: 4/5 people lost in space 3 million years into the future, battling aliens and what not. The last series was slightly more simliar to Hyper Drive in as much as they were on a ship with a larger crew.

Hyper Drive: 6/7 key characters on a ship in 2151. The humour is different, more subtle, often aimed at bureaucracy.

Alhough Red Dwarf was the first sitcom set in space, Hyper Dive has a different style of humour, and is set in a different time period.

reply

[deleted]

I didn't like Hyperdrive, i wanted to, but there wasn't enough substance for me, all it seemed to be was a funny joke about our culture in space, then a random alien that would probably be more at home in Red Dwarf, best british sitcom pre-Peep Show. Still, League is awsome about how it can be so dark, yet funy and somehow touching, well, creepy, that's a form of touching, yet friends and Will and Grace, *shudder*, are too happy, are Americans always happy?

If you wished "The Sound of Music" was really called "Snakes on a Plane" You'll love this film!

Red Dwarf: 4/5 people lost in space 3 million years into the future, battling aliens and what not

There are no aliens in Red Dwarf all the creatures they encounter are man made

reply

Well if English comedy is so nasty then why is America quick to rip of our ideas and turn them into an American show? E.G. Ted Dwarf, Faulty Towers, Whose line is it anyway?,Are you being served? etc.

And there is a lot more Biritish comedys which have differant types of humor such as those i mentioned above. And it is better than American comedys which are based around one charater who is generally a bumbling idiotic moron who gets himself into highly unlikely situations and somehom gets out of it.

reply

ye absolutely rite and their most succesfull comey the simpsons is now using english writers cos they have run it in2 the ground and its crap now a habit american comedys seem to never give up

I'm from the uk, and i have to admit that while most of the american commedies are either copied or crap. Scrubs and two and a half men are 2 of the best shows on tv. what ever country your in.

reply

im with you on scrubs but two and a half men?! surely not its a basic format with basic jokes and two actors who seem to have lost the screen prescence they once had

I'm British and I have to say that I prefer British comedy to American as it can be funny on many different levels. For example something which sounds completley innocent at the time can actually have a deeper, more funny meaning, wheras American comedy tends to be very obvious rather than subtle and right in-your-face. I am merely saying that I prefer intelligent comedy and am in no way suggesting that American comedy is rubbish. I am just stating my opinion.
The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse was a great film and I hope to see more - but there probably will not be any more from the town of Royston Vasey! You'll Never Leave!

Examples of good British Comedies:
Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, Absaloutley Fabulous, TLOG etc. etc.
P.S. Anyone see and like the Christmas Special? Dark Stuff!

I loved the Christmas special but then again I love anything that involves the League

I really enjoy two and a half men. It's actually really good (Albeit unoriginal) when you get into it. The jokes are simple, but it is funny.

Charlie: Dont leave your juice box on the piano it will leave a ring
Jake: How can a box leave a ring?

your comment is disgusting and nasty

As there have been so many US comedy shows shown in the UK and UK shows vice versa, I think it's fair to say that the influences from each culture can be seen in the other's output. That being the case the line between humour around the world seems to be blurring.
Of course there'll be things that some people won't understand from other countries, but most of the time this seems to be down to the jokes being about local things that people who don't live there couldn't understand anyway. That's not to say it's not funny, it just can't be appreciated.

No, this isn't "humour of british style", it's just a really lousy and unfunny movie.

If you want actual british HUMOUR, then watch something that doesn't suck, such as Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Bottom or The Young Ones.
