How has this pile of crap been getting good reviews?

Saw this on Channel 4 last night, and when it finished I decided it was possibly one of the worst films I've ever seen. I was a massive fan of the television series (have the whole boxset on DVD) and also have the live version (which incidentally is also crap). So I was half expecting something a bit funny, but the film...awful! Makes no sense whatsoever (at the end of series 2 H.Briss is abroad), Tubbs and Edward are dead..just awful.

I've checked rotten tomatoes which is usually quite harsh, and this film got 76%...WTF!! Rubbish. Film was awful - can't think of one bit that made me laugh..and the 'olden' times clips were god awful too.

The film doesn't have to keep continuity with the television series as Royston Vasey and it's residents are shown to be figments of the writers imaginations, therefore anything can happen - look at the way Geoff writes himself into the medieval film script (in fact given the plot twist in the hospital at the end, it's possible none of the film actually takes place in reality). The film is far from the best thing they've done but I think it's still pretty good and deserves credit for it's sheer inventiveness if nothing else.

AS for the live DVD being "crap", are you talking about the Drury Lane one or the LOG Pantomime? Haven't seen the latter but "Live at Drury Lane" is one of the best things they've done IMO (alongside the Xmas special) and comes closest to being what they're really about since that's how they started out.

Each to their own.

You didn't like the film because it wasn't the same at the television series? (you only say you thought is was 'crap' but don't explain why)

Why should a film which is a stand alone creation (hence it is irrelevant to complain about the reappearance of Tubbs and Edward, the fact that Hilary Briss wasn't abroad...) have be like the tv series?

The League of Gentlemen are rare among the comedy fraternity in that they don't want to repeat themselves, but move on & create something different (that was why the 3rd series was a departure from series 1 & 2)

Not everyone wants to be drip fed the same thing.

Maybe it got very good reviews on the film website you mentioned because some people thought it was a considerable achievement of The League to come up with an original film that did something new from the usual television comedy spin off!

Its a clever, intelligent & very funny film. You can appreciate it the more times you watch it - its multi-layered complexities and subtleties could be missed on a first viewing.

'Live at Drury Lane' is wonderful & showcases The League's talents brilliantly.

Don't you think dismissing the film and the live show so disparagingly & lightly as 'crap' is rather (quite) harsh?

ok it's been a while since i saw it but complexities and subtleties? maybe not - Tubbs sitting on a toilet saying "I've just made a brown fish" on the other hand is priceless. The movie is great in that it avoided the usual "extended TV episode" - the Simpsons and Sex and The City didn't translate well to big screen but thankfully with the idea in LOG they were able to expand and invent new things which is why i think it's a brilliant movie. The ending, yeah, sucked a little bit but on the whole i loved it.

Because it is brilliant. I loved the LOG from first time I saw them and this is as original as it gets. Some great lines and a fantastic(in every sense)plot.

I was wondering the same thing.
I often enjoy watching wacky movies that get very low ratings, such as The Stupids, The Pest and Fred The Movie.
After watching this yesterday, I expected it to be rated somewhere between 1 and 2, but was surprised to see that it has managed to get a whopping 6, which isn't terribly bad by IDMB standards.

It's not the worst movie I've seen, but probably on the bottom 10.
