What is the matter with you people
Just got the DVD. I expected the worst when I watched this, based on all the comments on imdb.
It's nothing short of brilliant.
I'm a big fan of the series, and this film was great. It wraps up the first three series in a great way. Incredibly pogniant at times, too. Especially the part where Herr Lipp stares at the newspaper clipping calling him 'the worst pun in the world' at impotent rage and frustration. Don't you know how genius this is? Making Herr Lipp the sympathetic character. This movie brought so many "one-joke/ one-dimentional" characters into a new light. And the King's evil stuff... that was bloody funny!
It's an incrediblely smart movie. I was appalled at the premise of it at first but I never should have doubted the League, they handled the 'metafiction' aspect more philosophically than I would have expected. There's this whole Becketian aspect to it, the whole questioning of whether the characters had any free will that really added a whole new level of intensity to it.
For you hardcore League of Gentlemen fans who hated this (or series 3 for that matter) because it was different, or didn't feature much Royston Vasey or the same characters established in the series, you should be downright ashamed of yourselves. I love that the League is constantly trying to reinvent themselves and try new things, the key element to their success as a comedy troop has always been idiosyncratic comedy and sheer originality, not the same overused cliches and running jokes. This is not Little Britain nor is it The Fast Show; The League are modern day pioneers in comic experimentation of the highest order.
They took a risk with the 3rd series and out came a sometimes flawed gem of sheer originaility. They took another risk with the movie, and this one is nearly flawless.
