when does keith start actually caring for natalie?

I was just trying to figure out at what point keith actually starts caring for natalie instead of "having fun" or messing with her?

reply

I personally believe it's when Keith drives to his secret spot across the lake from the bonfire where all the "cool kids" hang out while Natalie is hiding in the bed of the truck. While she's spilling every thought going through her head, the camera only focuses on Keith's face. You can tell he goes from annoyed to nearly crying and then all of the sudden he turns around and kisses her. I think that's the moment when he realized he had actual feelings for her instead of enjoying messing wiĆ¾h her life.

I disagree, I don't think he actually falls in "love" with her until she runs up to him in the airport and says, "I'm staying with you until the end you big jerk!"

I think he had "some feelings" for her always. But, his entire motive was to completely tear her down, which he did.

The scene you're talking about outside the truck, he doesn't "almost" cry, you can see a small smile sneak across his face. The smile says, "she bought it...haha..." Watch it carefully.

The problem was that when she REALLY fell in love with him (to the point that it didn't matter how badly he'd treated her, she basically said at the end "I'm going to watch you DIE, that's how much I love you..." he melted.

I agree with MegMaedgen: Keith realizes he cares for Natalie when he drives to his secret spot with Natalie hiding in the bed of his truck. His face goes through several changes of emotions, to the point when he is on the verge of crying as Natalie spills what she feels for him - but then he suddenly reigns in his emotions for control when he whirls around and kisses her. He cares for her, but is not quite ready to acknowledge it to himself - he wants to maintain control over his "plan" with having fun with Natalie. In the next scene when he is mean to her, pushing her away from him, as she storms away from his truck into her house, watch his face. He relaxes the "mean" and his true emotions of sadness and regret shows through. He is warring with himself with his conflicting emotions. He doesn't want to allow himself to be completely drawn into Natalie... but he is gradually losing control as the movie progresses.

If you watch the film closely you will discover Keith was always in love with Natalie. He was the third Russian soldier in the play where she was a princess. He references this early in the film but most of us miss it. The trick to this brilliant film is figuring out Keith's secret. After nine viewings I think I finally "get it". Do you fully understand what he is doing here? This is great film making and McCartney was robbed of an Oscar for this performance. Most of us, as members of an audience, sort out the films we see. This film does the exact opposite. This film sorts out the audiences who are allowed to see it. You either see it or you don't. You either get it or you don't. Rarely are American films this intelligent and well written. If you have not lost your ability to think for yourself, I urge you to see "Keith". This film is the absolute best of what American cinema has to offer.

reply

Hmmmm... you're right. That's why he chose to "play" with Natalie to begin with. He doesn't believe she will ever "notice" him... or care for him... so he tells himself that he will just "have fun" with her...but obviously this is because of a long infactuation with her. In the last scene he is in, he reveals to Natalie that he hated her... but love and hate are so close together in some cases. What he really means is he wanted to hate her - for not noticing him.

I love this film because there is so much depth to it. And Jessie plays his part SO well - I'm not used to actors/actresses acting a part so well that you can even interpret each facial expression. This is a superb film. Love it!!

reply

And I think that he always like "had a crush" on her and tried to convince himself that he hates her as he says in the beginning. Maybe because he never noticed him or maybe because he didn't like it that he liked her.

reply

Yes it's obvious that he always had a crush on her and he never had the courage to talk to her. She's the beautiful social queen and he describes himself as the "truck guy", which is way under her league. However, if you ask at which point he "fell in love" with her, more than a crush, I think it's after their weird bowling night! He saw how funny she could be, and he fell for her. He became more jealous of Ralf and started annoying her. I loved the love/hate moments afterwards.

Bravo I also found upon the second viewing that he was always in love with her, the reference to the childhood play was planted and could have worked in either direction but when she uncovers the photo he is looking right at her.

Perhaps you are misinterpreting the summer blockbuster hits as the "best of what American cinema has to offer" because they are simply the highest grossing films. America has produced most of the greatest (and worst) films in history. But... If you are still around after these 5 years and this message finds your inbox could you please elaborate on your personal collection of "absolute best" in cinema? I'm not being sarcastic, I sincerely want to know so that I might find more hidden gems.

reply

I agree that Keith always had some feelings for Natalie. But they were definitely amplified the night they went "bowling" and even more so when she unknowingly told him to turn into his secret spot.

Which would be worse, to live as a monster or to die as a good man?

this is one of my fav movies, had seen it so many times and just love the ending scene of natalia and keith .

i think he knows her, her feelings and much more as had an infatuation on her from his childhood

if you look at keith's car going away when she kisses her bf in the background and the way he behaves and mentions about it the next day
he was infatuated to her from his child hood but couldnt be with her
so with no further use of therapy he decides to be with her which is pretty much what every lover wants.... , but just to be and spend time with her
i think he has no intentions of messing with her life ,
we get the feeling from the beginning scene with the doctor and the ending scene when he tells her that he screwed her life

in the beginning scene he was casual without revealing his love for her as it was not necessary and tells him he just wants to have fun

in the ending scene he tells her that coz it appeared that way for everybody
including him and her,but we she dint buy that when she tells him to try again
the ending scene was a role play like some earlier scenes in canteen , chem lab
conf room , but was used by her to express that she loved him deeply irrespective of his condition and he wanted to hurt her with his words to test her whether she understood him properly and finds that she loves him as much as he does .

I have watched this movie over 50 times, and have watched every expression closely and every nuance. It is a very complex movie and Keith is a very complex character.
Keith was not necessarily in love with Natalie, but always had a crush on her since the 6th grade when he was Russian soldier #3 and she was the princess. That is why he chose her. He also hated her because he thought she was "TGFY" and also envied the life she had and also the life she would have in the future.
Remember that Keith had virtually no friends. He was a very lonely boy and also lost his mother at some point in his life. He secretly wished for a girl like Natalie but thought he could never get her. But, now that he was dying, he had nothing to lose. He then decided to try to strike up some type of relationship with her. Because he was so angry at his whole situation; he, at times, wanted to destroy her. However, deep down, he really wanted her to love him. The more he got to know her through their little encounters, the more conflicted he got because he was falling more and more in love with her. He was truly enjoying spending time with her, and she was too. I would go so far as to say that their little endeavors were probably the most fun he ever had in his entire life! Keith, however, always masked his feelings about just about everything, so he was always flip about emotions. THink about it, would an extremely lonely and outcast boy like Keith ever be able to resist the attentions of a girl like Natalie?

He started to actually realize he loved her the night she found his secret spot. If you remember, he said they were at a crossroads. Natalie, at that point, decided to stay with him, and they moved forward through the intersection. She then found his secret spot, and she really shocked him there. He realized there was alot to her and also that she actually had feelings for him. The kiss he gave her was real, he was not trying to be manipulative. At this point, he started to feel emotional pain because he was dying and knew there was no future with her. He then started to push her away because he is pretty incompetent at dealing with the painful emotions. That is why he pulled the stunt with the truck and the cliff the next day. He couldn't tolerate the emotions he was feeling. He wanted to push her away. He also (probably subconsciously) let her find his pills by giving her his jacket.

If you watch the scene where they make love, believe me, he is not play acting there. He was very obviously in love with her and had a lot of pent of feelings that were released. Watch the way they kiss---this is not a boy who is trying to hurt/manipulate her. This is a boy who is madly in love who is letting loose a lot of bottled up emotions. Afterwards, however, he again pushes her away because, he just cannot bear the pain of the relationship and the lack of a future. At this point he is also feeling a lot of guilt because he thinks she would have been better off without him and with Raff.

In the airport scene, he finally faces everything. He acknowledges his feelings. The reason she is not mad at him is that she ALREADY KNEW everything. She realized over time his motivations in the beginning, why he chose her as a lab partner, and why he was pushing her away. She understood. She just wanted him to acknowledge his love for her so that they could be together in his last days.

I very rarely read every word of long posts like this, but I did for yours, and I loved and agreed with every word of this analysis.

Just saw the movie, and I think you were spot on.

Jencam-2 I also enjoyed ready your post. It made alot of scene! Thank you :)

Brilliant post.
Is the best explanation of the movie.

Haha! one of the best messages EVER!!

absolutely spot on!

I totally agree..

I felt sorry for the both of them. I didn't see Keith as a bad kid at all. Just troubled. I got the impression he was falling in love with her throughout the entire movie, especially at the secret lake spot.

I wish things could have ended better for them... :(

It's been a while since you posted this, but I just had to add in that I'm so glad so many other people interpreted the film similar to this.
I've only watched it once, but my initial reaction to Keith was basically this, without the deep analysis on the "hate". I read some comments (or a lot of comments) on the movie afterwards, and most of them stated that it was so romantic how Keith fell for the girl he hated. And it was as simple as that. I had thought he'd made that up because he'd wanted Natalie to let him go-to hate him so she wouldn't get hurt in the end. After reading those comments though, I felt like I was the one who'd misinterpreted the movie and it really brought how much I'd rate it down.

My point is your analysis is great and really shows that Keith needs to be a higher rated movie.

reply

I totally agree with everything you said. Keith never truly hated Natalie. I only disagree about the ending. I don't think that it represents Natalie moving on. I think Natalie loved Keith so much that after he died, she was trying to get a glimpse of what Keith experienced. When she was in the back of his car, she wanted to be as close to death as Keith, to get the same feeling that Keith experienced that night. She kind of let her life in the hands of the hazard. She could have stopped the car on time or miss that second and fall over. Also, she put Keith's belongings in that suitcase that she carried with her on her graduation day, so she just wanted to take Keith with her because he missed the graduation day.
Keith's truck was more than a souvenir that she kept from him. She was trying to continue Keith's life by doing things Keith would do or he would have like to do.

But that's just my interpretation that could be somewhat subjective because I emphasize very much with the character, Natalie.

Making a reply after 12 years!!
If you look closely when he was trying to get another "anti-date" at 4 a.m., he was clearly jealous of Raphael

When she asks him about it, he doesn't answer, his voice goes down and just says that "it's not a date" in a straight face, as if he was trying to hide his emotion, as if he wants it to be a date but he can't afford it be a date because of his conditions.

I believe it's when we first start to realize that his plan of simply having 'fun' is not quite working out and that he has started to fall for her, other than the fact that he is simply jealous of her which is evident at the beginning of the film.
The character has so much depth for a teen coming of age drama.

at the beginning keith had crush on her, but he wanted it just for fun.
i think keith started caring, at the scene when they both fought in the truck and then natalie almost left him, but keith didn't wanna leave, he stayed in the truck, and then the doctor and the kid came to talk to keith and natalie.
I am sure that's the moment.

reply

Jesus, he always cared for her, it's pretty obvious in the movie. I dont belive some of you actually think that at some point Keith did want to harm Natalie or to tear her down.
Everytime he said something bad to her was pure *beep* He just wanted to back her off, because he knew they couldnt stay together for a long time. This also includes the part when he says he wanted to destroy her life. It was just his way to drive Natalie away from him. Keith liked her so much he didnt want her to suffer.
