People don't seem to get this -

Keith HATES Natalie... He absolutely abhors her.

Keith felt his entire life as if Natalie had everything and he had nothing. Then, not only did he have nothing, but he finds out that he's DYING on top of all of this.

He hates her. He hates her (he says at much at the end and he MEANS it!) and wants her, and likes her and loves her all in the same breath. He's ultra bitter towards her, and he wants to make her suffer. And since he's dying, he figures, "Why not? Why not do something crazy and make someone hurt..."

You can see how much he hates her repeatedly in the film... No one seems to get that. You can see several points in which he not only says things that are utterly cruel to her but the expressions on his face, etc... You can tell it from the first few moments in the movie... He's going to "HAVE FUN" with a girl instead of ask her out, she's "TOO GOOD FOR YOU" (all said in VERY bitter tones) This is why Al is worried about him as he's saying these things. He wants to completely tear her down and then leave her high and dry after she finds out that he's dead.

The problem is that in the end, after she discovers his little secret (and the fact that he is trying to work through his hate and have feelings for her), she pulls something that he didn't expect and ruins his plans. She brings the element of redemption into the mix.

The scene in which she is saying goodbye to him (the last scene between the two of them) you can still see that "hatred/confusion" for her that he has all over his face, and she pulls (what can only be likened to) a "Broadway/Phantom of the opera moment" when Christine Daae' kisses the Phantom and says, "God gave me courage to show you you are not alone..."

In this moment, (the moment where Natalie pulls him to her and says, "I'm staying with you until you leave," You can see his struggle... that's where he loses it, and that's where he changes for the rest of his life even though his life is short. You see that he's so stunned by this reaction to him that he even spends a few moments with his hands just hanging in the air before he drops the suitcase to hold her back. It's this action, (full redemption, full forgiveness, etc) that changes him.

This movie is about how she changes HIM in his final moments, not the other way around.

It's about a major backfire on a plan because he wanted to take someone down with him and instead all that she showed him was unconditional love which wasn't what he expected at all.

I think the plot is amazing.

100% Agreed!

I agree.

Jesse McCartney described it best: "It's a love/hate relationship." Yes, Keith has a great deal of anger and resentment toward Natalie. She has everything he knows that he can never have due to his illness.

The end is powerful because he is still coming from a place of anger, hatred, and fear toward her. However, throughout the course of the film, it becomes obvious that what he set out to do (hurt and destroy her) is becoming increasingly difficult because of his own feelings of love toward her. But, he holds on to his hatred which appears to be winning out.

But, Natalie demonstrates how love always overcomes hate and fear. She stands there, even when he is still trying to hurt her and push her away, and proves to him that he can no longer hurt her; that her love is true and genuine. Look at his reaction when he says, "I screwed you! I screwed you big time!" And then Natalie says, "I made love to you." Look at his face when she says this. It's the last thing he expected her to say to him. The cracks in his armor reveal the scared child underneath that only wants to be loved.

It's true that I never read responses.

No. You got it all wrong. The proof is in Keith's last words. I'm sure you misheard it. He said "So all in all I'd save you from the worst thing that ever happened to me.". When Natalie heard this she knew that Keith loves her from the very beginning.

I review the favorite quotes in Keith here in IMDB and it wrongly says "So all in all, I'd say you're the worst thing that's ever happened to me. Goodbye, partner."

It's all a matter of perspective. There is no "right or wrong."

Relax and learn to appreciate other people's perspectives.

except that... he doesn't.

It's in the script, sweetheart.

"I'd say you were the worst thing that's ever happened to me"

Keith actually could have picked anyway to hate. He could have picked a popular chick who actually had everything. The perfect boyfriend, the loving parents, the big house, latest fashions...but he chose Natalie. Keith knew how hard she worked for everything. He'd been going to the same school as her, hadn't he? Why would he hate a girl who worked her ass off every single day but not a girl who had it easy?

Natalie doesn't have everything. Keith correctly guesses what her life is like. How hard she works, how her father didn't get into Duke so he's making his dream come true through her...in that boardroom, remember? With his hand on her head. He obviously knows a lot about her. So, seriously, why would he think she has everything?

The plot you're suggesting is juvenile and doesn't make sense. Why would a dying boy spend his last few months bringing down a girl he hated? How can he be so bitter about life, yet so...not? Why would he not spend the remainder of his time getting close to someone he had a crush on...someone he loved...if we've seen anything, it's that Keith is good at hiding his emotions. He hides behind a guise of playfulness, not taking life seriously. Inside, he's obviously hurting.

What was he dying from exactly? I never got what illness he had?? :(

He had cancer.

I don't think he ever hated her even at the beginning of the movie. The game he claimed to be playing with her was just a way to protect himself in case he didn't find the love he was looking for.

As the relationship progressed he then appeared to be cruel to her but what he was actually doing was trying to push her away to spare her from having to see him die. Giving her an easy way out if she wanted it. I think he was also sort of testing her to see if she loved him enough to see him die.

The movie set you up to think he was a sociopath but had a sort of twist ending to show you why he was acting the way he did.
