Do you have to have read the book to understand the movie? I was thinking of watching it at my birthday party, but I haven't read the book and neither have a lot of the other people who are coming.

Reading the book is unnecessary, feel free to watch it on your birthday. FYI: The book is really good, you should read it someday.

I thought everybody read this in elementary school, this book was part of my fourth grade curiculum.

I suppose that a few people around had already finished Elementary School when the book was released.

4th grade seems a little young.
Our school read it in 7th or 8th grade and same with my wife's school.

But it's a really great book.

Agree with this. The movie is pretty depressing. The book is still one of my favourites so I highly encourage you read it.
