What warranted death in this world according to the book? Apparently they killed The Giver's daughter because she withdrew from the program. They were going to kill Fiona for helping Jonas. They killed babies, I'm not sure why...they didn't weigh enough. Seems really harsh. What earned you a death sentence in this community according to the book?

There were some crimes where the punishment was release. One of them was about a pilot who made a wrong turn and was flying too low. Other times, more serious crimes were given a three strikes program. Commit three specified crimes and the person would be released. Those crimes could be as simple as stealing and possibly even smaller laws. This only counts for adults.

As for the previous Receiver, the Giver's daughter, in the book, she had been a Receiver for a few months when the Giver gave her negative memories. She couldn't handle it and went in to request release, giving herself the shot in the arm.

As for the babies, in a set of twins, they killed the one who was the "runt". For others, such as Gabriel, they would do so only if he doesn't meet the developmental milestones. For Gabriel, one issue was that he wasn't sleeping throughout the night.
