Did Mormons take over the future?

I saw some interesting themes that seemed way too Mormon not to mention:
1) No touching was allowed between young boys and girls
2) Assigned uniforms - and dressier ones to go to their congregation
3) The birthers were wearing dresses, not pants.
4) No smoking, alcohol or caffeine.
5) Obviously history wasn't taught in school b/c no one knew about War or Love.
6) They lived in this big neighborhood and when someone went out of the limits, they were considered to be dead.
7) They obeyed their head of state (Meryl Streep) without question like a God.
8) They loved capital punishment (attempting to execute Jonah's female friend).
9) Black and white filming = white shirts and black ties of Mormons
Although, one thing didn't jive:
Mormons have as many children as possible. They wouldn't be killing any of them! I guess the protagonists needed some obvious motive. Although, wouldn't the future have some better contraceptives? lol

reply

I didn't see any magic undies, though. LOL.

You made me laugh so hard!

I'm watching now. Sounds for sure to have Mormon similarities. The sad thing is this DOES happen!

reply

Looked more like a liberal utopia to me. Everyone has to do exactly as the government says, or pay the consequences. The old and young live or die based on what the government decides, paying the ultimate consequence.

reply

Yes exactly what our goverment wants now.

My thoughts EXACTLY. I tell everyone to watch it so they can see the future of a liberal Socialist America. I judge a movie by my overall reaction to it. Cinematography, plot holes, bad acting or scripting, etc. are secondary to the overall premise/feeling of the movie. The overall feeling of this one was a warning. I love futuristic movies - they are my favorite. And unfortunately I do think the future dies look bleak for our world.

PS The book was actually better than the movie. But because I love the book, I just added my own memories from the book as I watched the movie.

Reality is Nothing - Perception is Everything!

reply

WTF?
I'm very liberal in my politics, and the "utopia" featured in The Giver is the exact opposite of how I want to live (excluding peace, that would be nice). Not sure why liberally minded people are demonized, when all they want is for people to be freaking nice to each other lol.

"Not sure why liberally minded people are demonized, when all they want is for people to be freaking nice to each other "

Because they trend to want it codified into law and for the government to determine what determines what is being nice to each other. Today's US liberals are usually want bigger federal government. Everyone, liberal and conservative wants people to be nice to each other.

One more to be added: The second "m" is always silent. (Think about it.)

I'm guessing you don't know any actual Mormons.

reply

"I'm guessing you don't know any actual Mormons."

Exactly what I was thinking. This society is exactly opposite of what a Mormon would have. This movie's hero is fighting against a liberal government. The only liberal Mormon I know is Harry Reed... And that dude is completely wacked.

Signed, Me.

thats funny because a mormon recommended it to me. its a pile of poop. regret watching it. Mormons love the film tho
=====================

It's just a film!! Chilllllllllll

reply

Because most Mormons I know highly treasure what they call free agency, and this film is all about regaining that free agency. I think the OP is getting Mormons confused with another religion. I even lived in Utah for a couple of years, and didn't see any of what he said except the white shirts and ties. The women do not just wear dresses. No ne who leaves the church is considered dead either. I know there is a religion who practices that, but I don't remember which one.

reply

ex-mormon here. OP is very wrong. This is as someone else called it a liberal statist 'utopia'. no discrimination, joy joy happy feelings, no recognition of race, no one stands out, no individual achievement.... see also Demolition Man or 1984 (the outer party, the 2 receivers the inner party).... and all present is the Thought Police ("Community Announcement" - no touching outside your family unit)

cAN YOU TELL ME WHY you left? intrigued and happy for you.

It's just a film!! Chilllllllllll

Wow, you must not know anything about Mormons or even met one. This list is very inaccurate. I am a Mormon. The only one that has some truth to it is number 4. We don't drink or smoke. There is nothing against caffeine in the church. It is common to see members who don't drink caffeine, but it is equally common to see members drink caffeine. We don't drink coffee, but many will drink coke, pepsi, etc. The other ones though, are completely off.

1. We don't believe in having premarital sex. And we are encouraged not to date until 16 years old. We are encouraged to be careful when dating to not cross the line, but touching is not forbidden.
2. There is and never has been assigned uniforms ever. Obviously, when we go to church we dress nicely. But its not like your excommunicated if you show up to church in your jeans though.
3. Women can where what they want in our church, but are encouraged to dress modestly. Most women in the church I know where pants more than they do dresses. The only time many will wear a dress or skirt is to church. But I have seen women wear pants to church and that is no big deal
5. I don't even understand where this one comes from. We learn history just like everyone else does. Mormon children will attend public schools just like many others. We learn history just as everyone else does
6. Mormons live all over the world not in a specific community. Yes, Utah has a large community of Mormons. But we don't think negatively of Mormons who live in Japan, Brazil, Mexico, or wherever they may live.
7. We believe that we have a prophet that we listen to, but we don't just follow blindly. We are encouraged to ask questions and seek answers to those questions. We encourage all to seek to have a testimony of their own of the church. That only comes from asking questions. We don't encourage blind obedience. We want people to obey because they want to.
8. While many Mormons are politically conservative and many may support capital punishment, there is no mandate with how we are to vote politically. We absolutely don't believe in murdering and killing innocent people like Fiona and the babies that were being killed. If you knew anything about Mormons is that we are certainly Pro-life. While the church doesn't endorse any parties or politicians, it will make stances on issues that it feels are of huge importance like abortion, marriage, and various other things. So the killing of innocent children already makes this community as far from being like Mormons as it possibly can.
9. White shirt and tie is not exclusive to Mormons. We dress up when we go to church. That isn't odd. But the tie doesn't have to black. You can where whatever tie you want.

The biggest difference with this community and Mormons is that one of our core beliefs is that having the ability to choose is VERY important. We believe the whole purpose of our existence on earth is for us to receive a body and strive to make good decisions while facing opposition. We commonly refer to this life as a "test." We are here to prove ourselves worthy to return to our Heavenly Fathers presence so that we can become like Him someday. We believe Satan before he became the father of all lies suggested a plan to God where he would play a similar role to Jesus Christ, but our agency would be taken away while on this earth. We would have no choice but to choose what we were supposed to. Gods plan, we believe was to give us a choice, because the only way we could become like him and obtain all the blessings he has in store for us is to face opposition and learn to choose good. He knew we couldn't do it by ourselves, so he sent Jesus Christ to come down and perform an Atonement for our sins so that as long as we strive our best to follow God's commandments and repent of our wrongdoings, we can be forgiven. It is because of that, that we can become better people and come closer to God and become more like him. Choice is an important part of that plan. Now this is kind of a short summary of some of the things we believe, but my point in sharing is to illustrate that choice is so important to us. This community in the giver couldn't be further from how we as Mormons want to live. The reason I love this movie is because it teaches the importance of opposition. Without sadness, there is no joy, without hate, there is no love. Without opposition we couldn't truly appreciate the joy that we can obtain. This movie teaches the importance of having the ability to choose. That is something Mormon doctrine fully supports. So please, don't spread these lies about our faith. Educate yourself about what we really believe.

Very well stated. Although I am not a member of the LDS faith, my husband is, and I've had plenty of opportunity to attend church with him and even host the missionaries. I'm very pleased to read someone refute the original poster's comments so eloquently and politely as well.

reply

Well, thank you. I certainly appreciate it. There are so many misunderstandings regarding Mormons so I try to help people understand when I can

reply

While I certainly have my disagreements with the LDS church, I disagreed with the original poster so much that I was planning on replying to him letting him know how incredibly wrong he is.

@Jeremy12345 your reply was perfect. There is nothing more that I can add except that I wish people would stop trying to attack the faiths of other people (especially when they know nothing about the faith).
