Entirely different idea for the ending

http://www.memoirsofa.com/FAQ.html#SGROBJ7D89116023151B40

Partway down this page is a short interview with Gabrielle Zevin, the film's writer; in discussing the ambiguity of the ending, she says that it could be inferred that the two are actually in the cab together, have been married for the film's duration, and have been playing an elaborate game with each other all night. The fact that this idea comes from the writer is particularly jarring; I completely missed this possible angle to the movie.

Wow, that's super interesting. I had no idea. Thanks.

that's bizarre!

Just put it on the Underhill's tab.

that would make no sense at all. who would sarah the dancer be? why would the girl in the elevator play along? who would have called the woman?

"We learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school"

reply

Well it'd be extremely strange if they did that but maybe they were role-playing. Remember when the came out of the elevator and he said "what girl in the elevator?" and then "who's Jeffrey?". I never got this while watching the movie but I guess the writers could come up with anything to explain it.

Sarah could be his actual "Other Woman" and he's lied to her about being with his wife.

You better understand I'm in love with myself Myself My beautiful self

At first, before they went up to the hotel room, I thought that they were a married couple playing a game like that but it later became obvious that she was his ex-wife.
