Fans of the story yeah right

If this was an American film I could understand but it seems to be a UK film from people who love the story. Yeah right Disney actually did a good job it some Scottish actors filmed in Edinburgh and build a set of Edinburgh but I'm not sure about the dog. The new one is being filmed in Stirling ? I'd rather they used a set as Disney did, none inits seems to be Scottish and its not because most of the cast wont be know to the US market anyway. What about the great scottish actors ? Even the dog is the wrong breed. The writers are fans of the story yeah right

I interned with a UK casting director when this was originaly in pre-production back in 2002. I asume that it is the same script, because John Henderson was attached to it previously. It was going to be shoot in Edinburgh, but there was a fire back in the old city of Edinburgh in the winter of 2002 and the production was shut down. I really liked the script and was upset that it was not being made at the time. I assume the casting director has changed because we were using many scottish actors, but many actors were hesitant because the real star of the movie is the dog. The choice of the westie insteed of the skye terrier was becasue westie are very photogentic. I am just happy to see this movie being made.

I am fascinated by this news and very, very hopeful for the project. Scottish trio Smithfield Fair has a new song about Greyfriar's Bobby - anyone have any idea how to get in touch with John Henderson, Picadilly Pictures or anyone connected to send the song to? Thanks & cheers! dbsmith ([email protected])

I was fortunate enough to work on this production and all i can say is give it the benefit of the doubt! We filmed in a number of places which included Stirling and Edinburgh and ought to give the locations department credit. It is silly to argue that the whole thing should be done in Edinburgh for it to be realistic. The parts we shot in Stirling castle and graveyard will be matched well with the bits we shot in Edinburgh castle and the real greyfriars graveyard. It was the most practical way of getting the time we needed to shoot in. The cast were well chosen and were very talented and beautifully dressed, some Scottish some not. The Scottish scenery was breathtaking and will be portrayed well in the film, and the extras were Edinburgh and Stirling's finest. I know for a fact that this film is written and directed by a fan of the story ... this was his baby and something he has worked towards for many years. What could it possibly matter what colour and shape the real dog was? You wouldn't knock the use of a woman in a shakespearian role - it's the portrayal of the story that matters surely? It is a lovely story and I'm glad more people will get to know of it through this film. I was also so glad to have had the opportunity to film in Scotland - I thought it was beautiful and I'm glad the film will show the same landscapes I saw. I'm thoroughly looking forward to its release. xx Avkis

We dont need to rely on children to make this movie a hit. What about all us kids of the 60's that saw it then. I will fly to the theater to see it and probably all the 50 + adults will too. What an outstanding movie then, hope it will be as good or better now.

I personally think it's *beep* retarded to remake this at all.

There is no way it will be even half as good.

And to whoever said it doesn't matter about the different dog, that's like making "March of the Penguins" with elephants.

Talk about straying from the story. x

Well said and very true. But I will still have to go see it

Changing the dog won't matter too much. Challenge to Lassie is exactly the same story and it works.

I noticed the Eleanor Atkinson is not credited as writing this so i would assume it will be different from the 2 disney adaptation already out there anyway as it looks to be based on the 'facts' surrounding Bobby.

Always found it odd that an American wrote this tale that us Scots eat up so readily. Oh well, regardless of the source material and the dog it's a charming story and children should love it.

my m8 is in the film - she plays mary something in it
what does it matter if the dog is the rong freed and it wasnt set in Edinburgh! at least they have scottish actors and actresses and it is not all english people for a change!!!

im a huge fan of this film and have visited greyfriars the old cafe which is now a pub called bobbys bar the little monument outside and the (old kirky..(churchyard to those who dont know scottish slang) where bobby used to sleep on his masters grave..and the little home where the orphans would look over bobby.. and a gravestone bought by americans and scottish for wee bobby where photos of childrens pets are next to bobbys grave..i think its a lovely peice of history..the real bobby was a skye terrier they used a westie as it is more of a softer faced dog..the original movie is lovely its a shame more people arent as found of dogs anymore..edinburgh was so tough back then but they still found it in there hearts to take bobby to there hearts..

I rented this because when I saw the picture on the cover it looked just like my Cairn. I know they say they used a Westie but he doesn't look that white as opposed to a more light tan color more common for a Cairn (same dog, just Westies are all white while Cairns come in a variety of colors). I know the story too, having lived in Scotland for a bit. Same mannerisms of my Corrie. I sat there and watched it, cradling him and sobbing (yes, under a lot of stress lately...I get way too emotional during animal movies).

Just saw this movie and I agree - the dog looks like a wheaton colored Cairn. Westies are white-white like a Maltese. However, the entire film looks like it was photographed in sepia. The dog is light enough that it could be a Westie that just looks tan because of the cinematography. BTW, I also had a Cairn named Corey. She was a grey brindle like Toto. She was my heart.

what if lassie was played by a staffie? it wouldn't be right would it! greyfriars bobby was an actual dog, it even has its own statue. I think (as a dog lover & owner) that the breed is important to get right

I totally agree with you and I am an American (with an English mother.)

When we were in Edinburgh years ago we saw the pub and the little monument that is so touching. The way I remember the story is that an old shepherd from the west retired to Edinburgh and brought his little terrier, Bobby. The old man ate his main meal every day at Greyfriars and they also fed the little dog.

The old man died and the dog spent all his days at the grave, returning to the pub for food as they continued to feed him, until people were complaining about a dog in the cemetery. An actual trial was held and Bobbie was declared a citizen of Edinburgh. I saw the actual collar with a brass fitting declaring Bobby as a citizen and the rights thereof.

The true story is so good. Why did they have to ruin it with kids and cop and whatever?

I bought this for my little niece but I won't let her see it now. I thought the British version would be better than the Disney, but no.
