I couldn't get the Kidnapping Mechanism

I don't quite understand here: How did the kidnapping start? Did David's mother purposely arrange for Max to kidnap her own kid, and upon doing so, pay him to kill David? If this is the case, it doesn't make any sense because of the chicken-and-egg cycle. For e.g.,

1. If it was David's mum who orchestrated the kidnap, why did she bother to call the police?

2. Wouldn't Max be puzzled to visualise that his target child is actually David's mum (who called him to kidnap David), when he was dressing up as Santa Claus giving out presents to the kids at the party)?

3. There was a scene that showed Max calling David's mum while the police was trying to trace the call. What's the purpose of this scene when David' mum simply want David dead?

1./3. I think, she had to call the police, because of her neighbours. If your child disappear and you do nothing about it, this seems strange. And so she had to make also the fake call while the police was with her, coz that's what's normally happend.

2. Max was very surprised when David's mum showed up in the diner and he followed the guy, who picked up the cell, coz he thought this was his guy(I forgot the fake name of the caller). So I think it's obvious that he never met this caller in person.

***Spoiler Alert***

The kidnapping had been arranged by "Sid," Michael Booker, who had a heart attack, so it makes sense Max wouldn't know the mother was in on it.

It's Michael Rooker not Booker

I'm sure others answered, but . . . Sid was in charge, by the way, not Max.

To give the appearance of a legitimate kidnapping that went wrong. It was a way to remove suspicion from herself.
2. Wouldn't Max be puzzled to visualise that his target child is actually David's mum (who called him to kidnap David), when he was dressing up as Santa Claus giving out presents to the kids at the party)?
Say wha? Puzzled to visualize that his target child is actually David's mum?? That doesn't make any sense. The word "visualize" is weird there, and David's mum isn't a child or a target.

Same answer as #1.

Another thought to #1: The letter from the kidnappers said: "No police or we'll kill your son". It's a pretty good idea to officially call a bunch of cops when your purpose is to have your son killed, isn't it?
The kidnappers didn't know that she was "Mr. Jones", so she had a chance that they would watch her house, see the cops arriving and panic, ergo kill the kid.
