I saw this in the theater and it had English subtitles.

forget about subtitles.
They couldnot translate the letter into another languages so you will miss more than 50% of their 18th century talk. By 18th century talk I refer to not using YOU but only HE and SHE when talking to each other. Nobody talks that way anymore.

Sorry, but you are incorrect. Jean and Gabrielle address each other as "VOUS," not as "He" of "She." This is the proper way to do in the milieu where this film takes place, which, by the way, is late 19th, early 20th Century (there was no electricity in the 18th !?).

I would like to add a personal, 20th Century, anecdote to this. I am not issue from a social environment such as the one depicted in this film, VERY far from it, but my mother addressed her mother (my grand mother) as "VOUS," as a sign of respect, and my grand mother addressed my mother as "TU," as my mother was still her "child." So, some people do still talk like this in some parts of the world...
