What ever happened to...

Does anyone know what happened to Hania? I didn't see the whole film so I don't know if they ever cover that. Is the last time he sees her when she leaves for France? I tried to google her but with no last name it seems impossible to find anything out. I am very curious to know what happened to her.

He never sees her again. However, right after she gave birth, the doctors found a tumor on one of her lungs. They give her 3-4 months to live. Her husband writes to the (now) Bishop to let him know and is shown to be somewhat bitter with God over the ordeal (he chose not to tell her about her condition). Months later, the doctors cannot find any signs or symptoms of her ailment. That is the last we hear of them.

It's not the last we see of her - in the final scene where we see that Karol has been appointed Pope, we see various of his old friends hear the news on radio or see it on TV, and she is watching TV when she hears his name anounced, and gasps in joy. She is much older (aging makeup) and in the movie has survived her lung cancer by many years, although I have no idea if that was true in real life.

In real life there was no Hania. Her character is based on two of Karol's female friends from his youth years, but I cannot remember the exact names.

There actually was a real Hania. This movie is based on George Weigel's biography of John Paul II "Witness to hope", and Hania is mentioned on that book. I also saw an interview of Hania a couple of years ago.
