a few questions...(SPOILERS LIKE WOAH!)

I liked Monster a lot, but there were a few questions I had after I finished the series:

1. If Johan wanted to kill everybody who knew him and therefore erase his existence, why didn't he ever go after his mom? I find it hard to believe someone who was so diabolical and intelligent would leave that loose end.

2. What the hell was the deal with Johan and Hans Georg Schuwald and Karl (The rich old man and the college student who was his son)? Why did he bother to re-unite the two? He didn't seem to get any info/use out of the pair.

3. I get that Johan wanted to re-enact the Red Rose Mansion deaths and that's why he tried to stir up some *beep* in Ruhenheim, but why did he try to kill all the innocent people who lived there? My and my sisters' theory is that he wanted to ruin the Eden that Ruhenheim was for Poppe but I dunno if that's the correct interpretation. Anyone think otherwise???

4. If Johan was trying to erase his existence, etc., did he plan to kill Nina and Tenma? How? He seemed to be trying to die in earnest when he threatened to kill Wim. If Tenma HAD killed him then how would Johan manage to erase himself from everyone's memory?

5. When Tenma visits Johan at the state hospital in the end, and he has that hallucination (???) of Johan sitting up and talking about his mother, what was going on there? It didn't seem like Johan woke up.

thanks in advance!

Spoilerific :)

1) The very last scene of episode 74 shows an empty bed with no Johan in it. Johan must have heard Tenma speaking about his mother- which would make him go out and find her, possibly, and the vicious circle being in motion again.

2) Johan tried to get closer to Schuwalz for a long time by killing all the people close to him for an unknown purpose. The closest way to Schuwald though was through his son, which is why Johan had the other student pretend he was the one. But as soon as Johan discovered that the real thing was in front of him, he did not need the other one any more. By presenting Schuwald's with Karl, Johan gained Schuwald's trust- Schuwald consulted him about EVERYTHING and promoted him to be his secretary. Thanks to this Johan had access to all the documents he wanted and he could steer Schuwald in any direction he wanted- Schuwald was eating out of his hand. The old man was still quite powerful, and having someone like this trust you and consult you gave Johan all the power. Then we dont know how Johan wanted to use Schuwald, all we know is that he changed his mind and decided to proceed with a new one involving burning down of the library.

3. I agree. Besides, Johan wanted to go with a bang, not just commit a suicide, but involve as much suffering of other people in it as possible. I am not sure whether that was the initial plan, but after learning that his memories were not really his but Nina's, he seemed to have wanted to punish Poppe by showing him the vision of the experiment he was working on.

4. Johan also wanted to Scar Tenma by making him kill him. Johan played with peoples emotions and probably thought it was appropriate for the man who gave him life to end it, but also it would leave an emotional scar on Tenma and would have proved his philosophy wrong. Johan's aim was to show Tenma not all lives are equal, which is what Tenma always believed.
Then it is a bit complicated, I am not sure whether Tenma really planed to erase everything about him, or that like all the other kids in 511 Kinderheim, he wanted SOMEONE to remember about him- except that he wanted them to only have bad memories involving him.

5. I think Tenma said something like: 'You have not woken up since then'- which may be eother the surgery, or a time after a surgery when Johan woke up, spoke to Tenma and then went into coma. I do think Tenma and Johan actually spoke. Also at then end we see an empty bed, which would mean that Johan was actually conscious.

thanks for the post. I had a lot of the same questions. I think a lot of questions went unanswered when Johan changed his plans toward the end and decided he wanted to commit a grand suicide. Because of that we will never know the full extent to his plans which seemed to involve using his "appentice" as a political pawn. I remember the apprentice being upset that eva shot his ear because "a politicians face is very important"

I enjoyed this show a lot, but a few more unanswered questions and my would probably stop liking it as much. afterall some mystery is fine, but too many question marks can kill a story.
