Guillermo del Toro is planning a tv adaption of Monster, for HBO!!!
This is incredible news!!!
Monster is the best anime ever made, and I'm sure no matter how many changes they make to the story; it will be amazing, because the material is just too rich.

You know what? I was thinking the other day how neat it would be to make this into a tv series. And look what I just found.
Monster has such an incredible plot. I just hope they don't *beep* it up. I think it'll work out though, seeing the people who are going to be involved in the project. As long as they keep true to the story and characters.
If they pull it off, this could be one of the best things HBO will put on.

shareThat's a good question. Johan is a such a complex character, it will be hard to find someone able to play him well.
The first actor that comes to mind is Simon Woods from Rome. But I might be talking crazy.

I'd vote for Cillian Murphy, despite the fact Johan is blond. They are both *beep* gorgeous, and Murphy's already proved he can do the drag scenes...it's not like there's any dark-haired Germans. And he'd get Johan's smile juuuust riiight...

Now that you mention it, Ulliel would be a great casting choice...I'd prefer Murphy, but he's probably too old by now. Does anyone know which actor is older?
shareCillian Murphy is older. By imdb, he was born in 1976 and Ulliel was born in 1984. Thing is, I believe he could still pull off this role cause he has that ageless face and all.

I just hope he stays true to the manga/anime and keeps the main character as the japanese Dr. Tenma... it may unfortunatley be adapted to a U.S. setting. Since I don't know how you would explain everyone in Germany speaking english... As much as I would love them speaking German, I don't think HBO would go for that.

I just read a quote from Del Toro in an article where he said he would be 'faithful to the source material'. I hope that includes setting and ethnicity of characters. Would be nice to have English speaking German actors, or at least actors that can speak with a convincing German accent.

I really, REALLY hope this gets done though. Del Toro is a magnificent story teller, and Monster has more than enough material and depth for him to create an awesome series (and HBO will provide him with the appropriate budget and actors).
Awesome. Johan really needs a really German looking actor. It just fits for Johan to be a very handsome German man. That one guys suggestion looks the part. Nice.
shareI have to disagree. Johann is supposed to be so young and beautiful, even as a man, I think he would be better portrayed by a very skilled female actress.
