Favorite Character? *spoilers*

Mine would have to be Lunge. His fight with Roberto was one of the greatest things I have ever seen.

Yes. But he is Runge. It can be seen on his badge, then he shows it to Dr.Gillen in one of the episodes. Here is the picture http://pics.livejournal.com/vladimir_v_y/pic/0000hhxw

True. But animators are usually very accurate then it comes to text shown on the screen. So, if they write "R", they mean it. His name is spelled correctly on the ID, so I assume his surname is correct too.

In manga his ID is just full of in some indistinct writing. Nothing can be read there.

By the way, "Runge" is a quite common surename in Germany. "Lunge" is a valid surename, but in Sweden.

So, I am sure that his surname was ment to be Runge. "Lunge" is just a mistake of fansubbers. A common mistake.
Just as Re-l from Ergo Proxy was called Lil in early translations. Before her name was shown on the screen in one of the episodes.

It's also "Lunge" in the official English version of the manga, translated and released by VIZ. :-)

So what? VIZ isn't the god of translation. The ID says Runge.

There are plenty of instances where the licensed manga's transliterations don't make sense - Cselkcess anyone?

And we all know that English translations are infallible... Especially since it clearly says Runge in the damn anime.

My favorite character is Mr. Grimmer easily.

reply

Grimmer was good. I also liked Richard, who played the ex-alcoholic. His story was a tragic one indeed.

Roberto FTW.

reply

I liked Martin, that thug/bodyguard guy. He only had a few eps but his story was very cool.

Grimmer was the *beep* too though. I forgot all about Richard, I also liked him. =D

reply

DH identified with Grimmer so much he actually sobbed at some of the eps. This is a man pushing 50, mind you.

For me it would have to be Eva that I identified with the most...partly a victim of fate, partly of really, really bad choices, partly of the bottle. (Are there no Friends of Bill in Germany???) Make of that what you will. But I have to say, that scene of her torching her mansion and walking away like it was nothing...man, I was cheering inside. I can think of a few times in my life I'd have done that with glee.

Yeah, I've had a few long dark tea-times of the soul...:)

I really liked Nina. The way they worked on her internal struggle between the life she thought she had been living and the one she lived in the past was captivating to say the least. Although the story focused more on Tenma's urgency to take away life he once saved, I think that Nina was suffering more because of the bond she shared with "the monster". No matter how many personal hurdles she had to deal with, the belief that she would rise above it all never wavered throughout the story. Most importantly, she was a character that everyone desired to have/be, only because they thought she was a perfect girl from the perfect upbringing. In my opinion, her triumphs through the adversity only added to the desire of Nina.

Grimmer, hands down. After he died, I lost interest in the series ... which didn't really matter because it was ending. But I almost cried when he said his last words. If the series is continued, they have to bring him back somehow ... don't care if it turns into a fantasy anime because of that, I say bring the Magnificent Steiner back!

reply

Agree with the above.

I'm fond of Tenma's character but Grimmer just stole the show for me, even from under Johann's nose.

His death scene was probably the most touching scene in the entire series.

I really hope there is a spin off on his early days in Kinderheim 511.

Runge, then Grimmer, and then Reichwein I guess. The scene with Runge finally meeting Tenma is extraordinarily badass, as is his fight with Roberto.

I never really watched the entire series. Sadly, it would have to be dieter.

He has very small and puny apperances in the series. But mostly appears as a supporting character to me. Whenever Nina is around, I guess. Those two together act like brothers.

You're all expecting this answer to come... and I'm surprised no-one has said it...for me Johan is the best character...

The guy is charismatic and manipulative to the point where he can have someone commit suicide if he wanted. The whole massacre he instigated in that small town in the end was extraordinary. Simple actions and paranoia caused unrest in what used to be a peaceful town. It's not something he picked up as an adult either he's done it since he was a child. Makes his character more sinister... The fact that he was born evil...

Other notable mentions are Dr. Tenma. I can sympathize with him. Ever since he met Johan in that dark night he's never been the same. Always quiet, always regretting his past. Knowing that his good deed helped bring a monster back to life. You can't help but feel sorry for how the past events have shaped his future...

Gotta agree with this. Whenever there was a part with Johan I was excited. Second for me comes Lunge and third Roberto.

reply

Martin. I was cheering him on when he beat the crap outta temna. nah j/k. but he had a very tragic story and was extremely badass.

I hated Eva at first but... at the end of the series I thought she had the most believable, organic character development out of anyone.

So many of the characters were great though, Det. Suk, Schuwald, The Baby. Runge was my favorite though, I kept waiting for him to figure it out and go after Johan. His two fights were both awesome.
