If it had only been 20-30 episodes

it would have probably been pretty good.

got the recommendation for this after watching and loving the death note. but I was severely disappointed.
the problem actually isn't the main plot which actually isn't bad. but it just does not have enough depth for 74 episodes. The ending itself isn't as bad as most people claim, its just after making me watch 74 episodes you better come up with something really, really good. And it isn't that great.

I've seen a lot of people claiming the huge amount of episodes is justified because the characters are being developed and its about the journey not the ending. the character development actually doesn't apply. every second episode we are introduced to a new character. since everything is very slow we don't go into too much depth with them and most of them don't really deal significantly with the main plot.
When does Kenzo's character develop? He starts off saving peoples lives. decides he has to kill the devil and continues saving lives. Halfway through he gets a shot at killing the devil and miserabely fails. So he gets another half of the story to develop his character and save lives and fails again. Basically he hasn't developed at all. And as for the journey he save people over and over. I got that he's a perfect guy and helps absolutely everybody within the first few episodes, there is no need for 50 episodes of the same.
what's the point of the devil's apprentice. he doesn't do a thing except for get killed quickly.
Martin is completely unnecessary. Yes I know that Eva learns to love through him. The problem is Eva has little to do with the main plot either and the episodes with these two do not show how they fall in love. It just goes to lets meet at the station from nowhere. There's you character development. And god I am glad we were introduced to that lawyer.
Then parts of the plot get repeated over and over and over. The welcome scene was displayed so often it annoyed me enough to not give a crap about what it was about by the time it was explained. Or Grimmer not being able to show emotions. "What expression am I making, you see I never learnt how to show emotions". 5 minutes later "What expression am I making now, you see...". Yeah I see you just said so. Again 2minutes later "what expression...". Come on do you think the viewers are stupid? But he actually does explain it again.

Just get rid of the unnecessary characters, stop repeating every scene over and over and this would have been pretty good. Still not great but pretty good. Like this it what just painfully boring to watch.

The repetition was irritating for me too. And Tenma ended up being a huge coward. He would have let the monster kill the kid instead of pulling the trigger. He was still basically the same weak guy he was at the beginning of the story doing whatever the Director told him to.

Johann wanted Tenma to become a murderer. And Tenma kept his purity and resisted until the last moment. He probably would have done it if the kid's dad hadnt shot Johann first.

Hi, Just finished monster today and I am ready to go through some spoiler-filled reviews to check if I am the only one who was disappointed. apparently I am not. I am confused because monster is considered by many as one of the best anime out there. And I like good anime!

i completely agree with every sentence of yours which is good because I don't need to invest time to write it myself :)

The biggest moment of frustration for me was when Eva went shopping with Martin. *sigh*

"Apparently I am not"? Were you actually considering the idea that you were so special that you were the only person on Earth who had that opinion? The best a show can hope for is to be liked by about 90% of the people who watch it, because there will always be somebody who just doesn't for whatever reason. So, even a great show like Monster will have detractors.

Although I really love this show - it's one of my all-time favorite animes -- I can see where it could have been streamlined a bit and probably made better with some quicker pacing.

The irony, of course, is that about 99% of animes get criticized for deviating from the manga, cutting out scenes from the manga, or creating their own ending because the manga is still ongoing when the anime is done. And here is a show that follows the manga pretty much letter-perfect and it gets criticism for being too long. Anime directors are pretty much screwed no matter what they do, if it's a manga adaptation. LOL
