Why does Johann pretend to be Anna?

Does it have something to do with gender identity disorder?

But why wouldn't he disguise himself as another man?
Also, when Anna escaped from the red rose mansion she found Johann dressed up like herself. I do not see an obvious reason for why he did that.

Yeah, I find this very weird and not explained in the series aswell.

Especially that he's dressed like her when they're children.

They're also dressed alike with their mother, when that man (Klaus Poppe?) forces her to choose one to take with him on a experiment..

Hmm, I see. Thanks for the quick answer:)

Is it mentioned anywhere that the twin's mother was hiding from Klaus Poppe? I cannot remember seeing the episode where she would get away from Klaus Poppe in the first place. In my understanding they were being observed the whole time, so there is no point in hiding the children. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, they both dressed like girls because they ran away from (klaus poppe) and went hiding in 3 frogs they did that cause they were searhing for twins "a boy and a girl" that was the best way to cover their identities.

sorry for my bad english, hope you understood what i meant.

he just wanted to benefit his sexyness

No one really answered your question. So i give it a try.

Johann disguised himself as Anna to get attracted to Detective Suk. Johann used him to 1.) reveal whose members in the czech police are former Secret Police members (and after Johann) and kill them (poisoned candies) 2.) get rid of the "murder weapon" (poison + candies) and dispose it at Detective Suk's place afterwards.

Yes lambdah is correct, that is the reason that I saw for Johan's unusual...desire if you may, to dress up like his sister. It roots from when they were trying to hide from Poppe when they were younger. Let me also comment that the last 10 minutes of Monster were epic, when Johan asked Tenma whether his mother gave Anna away on purpose...it was as if everything was summed up for me. Great series.

DOES IT HAVE TO DO THAT YOU ARE JUST TOO STUPID TO REALIZE THAT YOU MIGHT RUIN THE SERIES FOR OTHERS?

I just came to look for some info about the series music when I, without realizing, read the subject of this post.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
TRY TO REMEMBER NEVER TO PUT SPOILERS IN THE SUBJECT!

if you're reading the forum before watching the series you deserve to have it spoiled.

reply

Moron, your bus is leaving.

if somebody is reading the forum before watching the series, means he probably is looking other information than the spoiler (see release dates, soundtracks etc)

reply

^ no you are the real moron. Above poster was right. Any kind of forum would have spoilers anyway (assuming that everyone has already watched the show)

reply

Replying just to rant: In principle, proper spoilers such as major character deaths or plot twists should have some sort of spoiler warning. That's just good practice in my opinion. That said, not every little thing needs a spoiler warning and at the end of the day, the best way to avoid any sort of spoilers is to not search for it on the internet or just be more diligent with how you do use the internet.

On the off chance you haven't figured it out yet, or for anyone else reading this thread, by that stage Yohan had obviously entered Hitchcock/'psycho' territory. He had unearthed enough of his past to remember being ripped from his mother/family (assuming he had forgotten), and that was the defining/turning point when his dehumanization began. His being 'disguised' as his sister when he was taken made it impossible for him to tell whether his mother was trying to protect him or his sister, it is all pretty clearly explained in the final episode. It wasn't cause he didn't know whether he was a boy or a girl, it was cause he didn't know whether his mother tried to protect him or his sister, or perhaps just the fact she actually had the capacity to choose between them.

reply

The question should be: why was he dressed up as his sister in the 3 frogs? And nobody has answered that. It was a disguise right? Mother thought nobody is looking for identical female twins, they are looking for mixed gender twins. AND it made more sense to dress the boy up as a girl because of reasons (he looks more like a girl than she looks like a boy or whatever). Hence -> why they would have the costume in the first place. THEN pretty much all of the stuff that you said...

reply

IIRC she dressed them both as girls because she knew they were seeking twins to conduct experiments on, but my memory of the series is far from reliable.

reply

It is all pretty clearly explained in the final episode that Johan wasn't taken from the Three Frogs for experimentation at the Rose Mansion, it was Anna who was taken.
The Monster wiki confirms this:

1981
* Franz Bonaparta and Peter Čapek come to the Three Frogs to take either Johan or his sister away for experimentation; their mother is forced to choose and selects the latter. She is also taken away.
*Anna escapes from the Red Rose Mansion and tells Johan about the massacre she witnessed (he takes these memories in as his own).

Apparently I wasn't paying close enough attention then, or simply forgot that detail. For some reason I thought johan was taken from the three frogs to the red rose mansion and from there ended up in the socialist conditioning/'education' program.

The creator of Monster Naoki Urasawa, was very much influenced by Osamu Tezuka's work, I believe. At lest, Monster has a very similar feel. Tezuka used cross-dressing in many of his works. Princess Knight, Vampires, and MW come to mind. The letter two have cross-dressing villains. Therefore, it didn't really come as a surprise to me.

reply

Because he wanted to get close to the cops and follow the investigation and he wagered the cops were likely heterosexual. He got both Suk and Patera to drool over him.

Even if Johann is a huge charmer, it was just easier to get to them as an attractive woman than as an attractive guy.
