Bleach (anime, so up to where anime ended) confuses me:

So here's my problem:

What are the power levels at? I've seen ichigo get his backside handed to him by Ulquiorra but captains weaker than him (like Byakuya and Kenpachi) have defeated mightier foes (like the number zero espada, forgot his name). Ichigo even went vizard form which should've made him far more powerful than when he fought Byakuya and yet....

It's been a while since I've watched it but I got vibes of this all over the place. Folks who had no business being tougher than ichigo fighting either at his level or in some cases even more powerful foes.

I've always been confused by this aspect.

As for the manga, I have little interest in reading it but have a friend who tells me every now and then what occurs in it.

Well, to be fair I wouldn't say Yammy (10/0 Espada) was stronger than Ulquiorra. After all, Ulquiorra was the only one of them (from what we've seen) who had a second release, and that probably put him in the first stop. One thing is certain though, Ulquiorra could easily kill Yammy, even Barragan (Espada nº2) could, I mean the guy could pretty much age anything and he only dies because his own power is used against him.

With that being said, the author doesn't give a flying f_ck about power levels. If you were currently following the manga, you'd know what I'm talking about. It's a mess, but whatever I guess, I'm still reading for the sake of seeing this story through the end.

You could give the manga a try, it's much more bearable than the anime which, despite having its moments, 45% are nothing but filler, non-canon material.

Fine, fine, I'll leave! But first I'm going to bother these peanuts! Hmm? Yes? Hmm? HMM?

I wouldnt say that Ichigo is more powerful that both kenpachi and Bakuya.
When Ichigo first meets them he barely beats them. He never even considered that he beat Bakuya. Ichigo is a captain class soul reaper but I wouldnt say he was stronger than yammamoto or shunsi.

As all shonen manga their power levels increase and decrease all the time and are often near impossible to pinpoint to a particular level.

Byakuya and Kenpachi are not weaker than Ichigo though, at least not when they fought.

Byakuya allowed Ichigo to live after their fight, Ichigo could only stand because he was using his sword as a cane while Byakuya nonchalantly walked away.

Amittedly Ichigo surprised Byakuya and Ichigo's hollowed form got in a good hit, but Ichigo didn't beat Byakuya.

Kenpachi has been limiting his true power ever since he was a child, so while Ichigo beat a version of Kenpachi, it was the weakest possible version of him.

It's not as simple as saying Ichigo has more reiatsu so he should win, Ichigo may have more reiatsu than some of the captains, but they're more skilled fighters, take Kenpachi fighting that Espada, all he did was use two hands in one swing and he fell the Espada like it was nothing, it doesn't always come down to reiatsu.

As Byakuya correctly summarized, Ichigo wasn't fighting with his own power in their fight either, and I'm not talking about Ichigo's hollow form, Ichigo's Bankai wasn't his own, it wasn't his own strength, Ichigo was cheating in a sense.

Now Ichigo has acquired his own power but we've yet to see it, so we'll see how that turns out.

Wow, I'd actually forgotten that Ichigo didn't beat Byakuya. It really has been ages since I watched bleach.
