Is the story of the Rocket Boys based on a real band?

When Kenichi Saitou described the history of the band Rocket Boys saying they only released one album after being totally overshadowed by the Beatles, that story to me sounded very familiar. I could have sworn I heard this story before about a band when other famous stars of that era described previous bands they had been in before they made it big.
