The big 'inside' joke

It's based on a line of dialogue said by Marisa Paredes' character.

Anyone catch it?

Well, apparently not with no reply in a couple of weeks....

Regardless, after dinner, her future in-law (the gardener) asks permission to smoke something that resembles hashish. Paredes' character, an actress, indicates her approval in a "nothing phases me anymore" kinda way by stating that she used to work with Almodovar.

Thing is, anyone who's seen films directed by Pedro Almodovar will recognize Marisa Paredes as one of the actresses he's worked with.

I thought the inside joke you were referring to was when one of Jacinto's luncheon guests recognizes Marisa Paredes, but thinks she's Carmen Maura.

Ohmigosh...I remember that, but since I hadn't see any Almodovar films with Maura, I didn't make the connection. Thanks for pointing that out--my bad!!!!

Famous actress and Almodovar-directed female lead Marisa Paredes is PLAYING THE ROLE OF wealthy/famous actress Carmen Maura , who in real life is also a famous Almodovar-directed female lead. Just to confuse matters, the real Carmen Maura plays the role of the hotel owner.

Throughout the film, Marisa Paredes' Carmen Maura character is "sort of" recognized as someone famous by various people, who aren't quite sure just who she really is. It is a pretty funny inside joke, but probably passes over the heads of most non-Spaniards.

She's not playing Carmen Maura. That was just a joke that they thought she was Maura, much to Paredes' character's embarrassment at not being very memorable. It would make sense for the woman to be mixed up, as Maura and the character played by Paredes had worked with Almodovar.
