Okay! Well! Like....okay. Umm, here it goes. Okay, like the whole purpose of the film is revealed during the last 15 minutes or so, pretty much. This is kind of film you have to really think about and maybe even watch more than once.

There is ambiguity as to what is really going on in the story. Is 'F' really his daughter, or is she some strange creature from the underworld? There is a constant contrasting of reality and fantasy (i.e. the scenes where the world becomes distorted by the camera effects.) The director wanted the viewer to question what was reality, just as Masoka questioned his sanity. In search of something deeper, he sought to drive himself mad. The terror that Masoka perceived in the suicide man, from the beginning of the film, was his litmus test for having achieved insanity. Stupid idea, I know, but remember that this man is depressed and desperate looking for some meaning in life. By constantly looking at reality through his camera lens, it had a dissociating effect from reality.

Notice the camera distortions in the ending as Masoka walks down into the subway. Has he finally gone mad, or is what he sees real? The director leaves it all up to the viewer to decide. It could be interpreted either way.

In short, it's an open-ended ending. It's up to the viewer to decide if what he's experiencing in the end is just in his mind or not.

His shock and awe at the end ?
Am I the only one finding that the smile on her face in the last scene is the spookiest image in the film ?
