It looked like he had been dealing with that for a long period of time,
I got that impression, too. We don't see much of their relationship, other than her bitching at him several times for doing things the 'wrong way'. It seemed like their baby was very colicky, etc., but she came off as the type of new mother who thought she was the only one who could do things the 'right way', didn't give him a chance to be a dad or even try, constantly bitched at him, and things escalated from there.
It looked like she was coming around, but by then he had had enough, I suppose. Unfortunately, it seemed like he had fallen out of love with her, which happens. I did like that he ended up being there for his son anyway, and was willing to co-parent.
He was really the only character I liked in this movie (although I liked the movie)! Everyone else seemed so self-indulgent. And I think Casey Affleck is great.
