The Cleverly hidden relationship between Lola and Charlie

Yes.....Lola was in love for Charlie.............and I appreciate the Director for nicely showing this strange relationship between them throughout the entire movie....

1. Charlie trying to save Lola like a Hero at the beginning....
2. Lola changed his mind inside the car...after Charlie insisted him to give more time
3. In the factory storage when Lola said "...like abandoned... Charlie Boy"(Probably not a strong point....but I feel here that Lola understood Charlie more than anyone)
4. In the restaurant when Charlie offended him for wearing those dresses.....Remember the expressions of Lola
5. A Very Special Scene....After the previous evening's bitter encounter with Charlie...Lola dreamt of his father....his father was angry because he danced like a girl....NOW...right then..CUT!!!....Lola suddenly smiled...He realised Charlie was like his father....Do you remember Lola actually loved his father even his father never saw him again. Compare this with many women trying to find their father in their men.
6. ...and Yes the final scene when Charlie and Lauren kissing each other...Again the expressions of Lola
Throughout the entire movie it was all inevitable from the expressions of Lola...and I would like to add to it the Director's idea of the scene inside the factory office...when Charlie and Lola is in there...Lola describing Charlie about the sexy look of a boot and the mic turned on...everybody was listening....LoL....Good very good idea to initiate that in the mind of the viewers.........

But....for a Relationship to be complete...it needs to be from both end....Lola was in but Was Charlie?
PS- Throughout the entire movie, except the last kissing scene, Charlie never expressed any romantic love to anyone....

yeah i thought so too, but it was just from Lola's side i.e one-sided,not a 'relationship' between Charlie and Lola.

I think Lola loved Charlie, but was in love with Charlie. Like I love my friends but I am not in lvoe with them.

Just because Lola was transvestite, does not mean he is necessarily gay. I have met transvestites that are not gay.

reply

Lola's a drag queen, not a transvestite. Most transvestites aren't gay, I don't know about drag queens.

reply

Ok, whether he was a drag queen or transvestite, he was not gay. There is a line in the movie when Lola says that he is not gay and thatwhat women want is basically a women and gives a but of a knowing look. Have ad libbed what he said but the meaning is there. Lola / Simon is not gay.

reply

I have NEVER met a drag queen who wasn't gay, and I've met dozens of them. (Lots of gay people in the theatre.)

reply

most transvestites aren't gay and i've met drag queens that are and some that are not. outside the restuarant charlie says that lola/simon should make up his mind, that he should stop hiding who he really is. i think simon was confused and didn't know what he was or what he really wanted. i def think that she had a crush on charlie though.

well, i got the impression at the end when chalies kissed lauren, that lola WAS in love with charlie....that look and that sigh!

GREAT film. good message from lola to don to change his mind about someone and don doing that and lola letting don win the armwrestling match as not to loose respect from his colleagues....

reply

I think the look and the sigh was more Lola happy that her matchmaking efforts had paid off

I can't say for sure that perhaps Lola did harbor romantic feelings toward Charlie but I know she cared about him a great deal as a friend if nothing else and just wanted Charlie to be happy...he clearly wasn't happy with his fiance

Yes you're right. Lola wanted to match make as he said to Lauren, go and stand by your man.

Great post The Murdoc but you missed the bit where Lola (Simon) persuaded Don to change his mind about Charlie. That was the turning point of the film for me and nearly reduced me to tears.

Interesting topic.

Personally, I didn't care whether or not Lola/Simon was gay. I think that the film doesn't definitively show Lola's orientation one way or the other.

The part that I found interesting, which I have not seen anyone else bring up, was when Simon/Lola dances with Lauren to "This is a Man's World". The dance is very sensual and I couldn't quite tell if Lola was hitting on Lauren or trying to force Charlie to realize his feelings for Lauren.

Good points macpro...

I daresay that the film makers aim might have been to suggest these possibilities without making definitive statements about Lola's sexual orientation, and her intentions towards Charlie, and Lauren in that particular scene.

I agree. Well said.

Thanks to all of you for such thoughtful posts.
I am yet just thinking , Can't Lola love Simon even without being gay(physically)? Lola is the best of both men and women. What if his women side loves Charlie. Maybe as someone here said 'that love' is just a freind's love to another freind. But with so much passion?????.........

May be I am lost here in the universe of love. I just don't know which planet to land on...LoL

This orginal post is a few years old, however, after seeing the film for the first time a few days ago, I have another take on who 'Lola' loved. Lola was not gay and was totally into Lauren. Check out the scene in the factory during the celebration when Lola puts on music and Charlie is upstairs in the office window looking down on Lola and Lauren as Lola put the silent moves on Lauren as they came together and danced. One of the smoothest moves I've ever seen.

reply

Um...Lola is definitely gay, in my opinion. Gay-ga-ga-ga-GAAAAAY!

Lola is a drag queen. Drag queens are gay. Therefore, Lola is gay. Trust me on this, people. =)

Gotta take another look

old post, but having just seen the film, and then reading this thread (thoughtful posts people), I just have to ask, why must we put people in categories? Maybe I have just lived a while, but I never wondered during the entire film if Lola/Simon was gay. Anyone watch "Priscilla Queen of the Desert"? There was a gay transvestite, a once-married with a child transvestite, and a transgender transvestite.

If I got to know a transvestite, or was involved with the transvestite community, I would probably meet men of all persuasions. People are diverse, as are their sexual preferences.

I loved the film--that from a heterosexual grandmother.
