Lola's missing link

kinky boots was rather touching and based on a solid foundation without it being heavy. it was supposed to be a comedy after all. but there was a lot of reality there, i for one could see a lot of things happening there in real life.

what left me feeling empty at the end was the lack of sexuality in Lola. there are arguments about if Simon was heterosexual, homosexual of bisexual. i have a suggestion. try asexual. Lola has the sexuality of a tree stump, and that worries me. there was such good overall characterisation especailly of Lola but there is this gaping hole where sexuality is concerned...straight or gay.

I was thinking that too. She does come off as kind of asexual. I'm also pretty confused about whether she was trans or just into drag. It's fine that they defined a difference between transvestisism and drag, but if she was just a drag queen then she wouldn't do drag half the time during the day too. It was a bit underdeveloped and confused.

I think you're right. 'Lola' loves dressing up as a woman, but she is missing that essential playful, sexy, FUN vibe that most drag queens have. Not one time, in my many viewings of the movie, did I see any sexiness...well, except when dancing with Lauren! I think he took this role to prove he could do it, could widen his acting repertoire, but he never truly inhabited the role. Given the fact that many transvestites love dressing as women, but go home to wives and girlfriends happily, I think the character was confused--he knew how much he loved dressing as a woman, but you never see any overt proof that he was INTO men. Maybe he's bisexual, or maybe a frustrated and lonely tranny, but he simply did not come off as gay. His stage presence was way too contained, and all the writhing, sexy queens around him made him stand out like a sore thumb--the dancers and the servers in the club came off as way more sexy! Even in a tame movie like 'To Wang Foo...', the queens talked about wanting love and acceptance and it was pretty clear they wanted it from a MAN. 'Lola' wanted acceptance too, and may have had just the smallest crush on Charlie (or Don!) but it was never made plain or open--'she' had more magnetism with Lauren in the one short dance scene. Again, good actor, but out of his depth with this. Even the tackiest drag queen manages to put across a bit of sexiness, and usually a whole lot MORE than a bit if they're really good. 'Lola' looked pretty in her female clothes, but never sexy--she didn't walk sexy, and didn't talk it at all.
