Is this in fact the final episode, #13, that's it , that's all it took for Little Slugger to be defeated, also, what the hell is up with the final 10 seconds, the old man writing the grand equation on the board, is it's purpose only to prevent full closure from occuring?

Ah, but in the end, it was not the ORIGINAL old man, but that younger detective, Maniwa.

There was closure. But closure doesn't mean the danger won't come again.

It is implied to be a cycle. Whether or not the events of the series were the first (it all could have happened before) it won't be the last. Maniwa taking the old man's place shows that.
