i was wondering if it is possible to trade a pokemon from red/blue to leaf green/fire red

True, but in Gold/Silver you used a Time Machine. Maybe there's somewhere on the Sevii Islands that allows you to do it. You can get there pnce you defeat the Elite 4.

You cannot trade to Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver or Crystal. It says so in the booklet that comes with the game. This is probably because the GBA versions are on a different type of system (GBA is like a portable super nintendo) with more sophisticated technology than Game Boy and Game Boy Color. Not to mention that there are new features like Natures and Abilities, which were completely absent in the earlier games.
Bottom line: It has nothing to do with timelines. It has to do with programming and technology.
